Getting Pumped for the Show with Learn 2 Fly

Young Melbourne pop punk band Learn 2 Fly share their excitement for their upcoming gig at The Espy for round one of Emergenza

Don’t let their young ages fool you—Learn 2 Fly are prepared to seriously rock the house at The Espy this Sunday, March 30th for round one of Emergenza Festival Australia. They're tightening their pop punk riffs and getting pumped for the big night. But, in between rehearsals, they sit down to talk to us about the start of the band, the direction they’re taking, and what’s in store for the show at The Espy.

WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION FOR THE NAME LEARN 2 FLY?
There's not really any inspiration behind the name, we just kinda liked it. Zach and Flynn weren't even in the band at that point when we came up with it. I guess if there was any meaning it would be that this band is kinda giving us our wings and we're learning to fly.

CAN YOU INTRODUCE US TO THE MEMBERS OF THE BAND?
Ethan is 14, he plays guitar and sings. Zach is 14, he plays guitar and does some back up vocals. Flynn is 13 and plays bass and occasionally sings for the band if we want heavier vocals. And Savva is 13 and plays drums for the band.

HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO THE POP PUNK SCENE, AND HOW ARE YOU DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BANDS IN THE GENRE?
We kinda got into the punk scene by just playing shows. People saw us, I guess they liked it, and then we played more shows, and the pattern started repeating.

    WHAT'S YOUR PRACTICE SPACE LIKE?
Our practise space at the moment is just Ethan's garage, or Savva's spare room. But we're getting a rehearsal/recording studio built and then that'll be our rehearsal space when it happens.

WHERE HAVE YOU PLAYED BEFORE AND WHAT WOULD YOUR DREAM GIG BE?
We've played a bunch of shows here and there, we've even appeared in Pearl Magazine. Our first show was a battle of the bands in August 2013, and we came 3rd. Just a week ago we played at BAHA Tacos in Rye. And we've played heaps in between. We played a show in early February (a battle of the bands) and we won, so that was really exciting. From that we got free t-shirt distribution from LabelState.com, and were in the next round.

HOW ARE YOU PREPARING FOR THE SHOW AT THE ESPY?
We're not really doing anything specific to prepare for the show at The Espy, we're just doing a bunch of practise, and really working on things like singing, and stage presence, but our songs are all ready. So just those kinda things, the technical bits I suppose.

WITH OTHER BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITIONS AROUND, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE EMERGENZA?
We chose Emergenza because it just seemed like something we wanted to get into. I mean, who wouldn't want to go to Germany? We've played other battle of the bands, but this one seems to be the biggest so far. We're really excited for this show and we can't wait to get in front of new people.
