The girls of Kid Sidney have been rehearsing and gigging like crazy in preparation for the finals at The Hi-Fi in Melbourne, and even have some new material up their sleeves for their waiting fans. They’re the only all-girl seven piece band in the festival, not to mention in all of Melbourne, but don’t think they’re counting on that novelty to get them through the finals. They’ve honed their live show, and are planning to lay down a killer live set. Before the show, they let us in on what to expect.
SO, DO YOU THINK YOU'RE READY FOR THE BIG NIGHT?
We've been rehearsing heaps and playing at many different gigs recently, so yes, we're pretty prepared! The Hi-Fi was a huge goal for us, and now that we've achieved it, we've focused on it so much!
WHAT’S THE BAND DOING TO GET READY FOR THE FINALS? REHEARSING MUCH?
The band has been rehearsing weekly, usually a couple of days a week. We've also been playing gigs every weekend around the community, so we've gained more performance experience. Not to mention, we've written a brand new song just for the state final!
WHAT, IF ANY, CHANGES HAVE YOU MADE TO YOUR STAGE SET-UP OR YOUR LIVE PERFORMANCE WITH THE FINALS IN MIND?
We have recently changed our stage setup as we now have one keyboardist, but other than that it's mostly the same deal. We might try to make the most of the big stage at The Hi-Fi and move around a bit more.
WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THE BIG NIGHT?
I think we all have something pretty exciting in mind. Most of us have seen bands play live at The Hi-Fi and know what a great venue it is. We don't want to overthink it too much so we're pretty focused on just rehearsing heaps and finalising our set.
WHAT EFFECT DO YOU THINK WINNING WOULD HAVE ON THE BAND?
It would bring us heaps closer, I think we would all be way too stoked to be able to really know what effect it'd be having on us. Going to Sydney together would definitely bring us all closer as a band and as mates.
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE FESTIVAL SO FAR? ANY FUNNY ANECDOTES FROM YOUR PREVIOUS SHOWS OR REHEARSALS LEADING UP TO THE FINALS?
Our band’s experience so far has been unforgettable. We have improved so much in such little time throughout the festival. And our band has had many funny anecdotes through band rehearsals. Hysterical laughing is definitely a favourite when we’re either stressed or tired.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ABOUT PLAYING THE HI-FI IN MELBOURNE?
We are all so excited to be playing at The Hi-Fi in December. We can't wait to play on a new stage in an entirely new and extremely well known venue. We’re still in shock that we will be playing at The Hi-Fi! We are also really excited to be playing in front of judges as well!
WHAT IS GOING TO SET YOU APART FROM THE OTHER BANDS AND SECURE A WIN FOR YOUR BAND?
We're set apart from most of the other bands in many ways, the most obvious being that we are an all girl band. In an industry that’s generally dominated by males, this importantly sets us apart from most other bands. We are also all underage, which could be seen as a disadvantage but we don't think it is!
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO BANDS THAT ARE CONSIDERING SIGNING UP FOR THE FESTIVAL NEXT YEAR?
We would encourage absolutely every band considering signing up, as it has made our band so much tighter and better performers. We have written many new songs that wouldn't have happened without this festival pushing us to our best.
IF YOU HAVE THE DESIRE TO SHOUT OUT TO ANY OF THE BANDS OR SAY ANY THANKS, DO SO HERE:
We would love to thank all of the people who make an effort to come down to watch us at our gigs. It really means the world to us when we see your faces there and see you singing along to our songs. We would also like to say another big thank you to our music inspiration Fred Leduc for helping us become the best band we can be and challenging us. And we would like to wish all the bands luck in the finals. We can't wait to hear you all play.
