Hanging out with Nothin But Jam Before the Show

Nothin But Jam takes time out before the show to get us geared up for their gig at the semi-finals at The Factory Theatre on the 2nd

Self-described as “smooth rock with Latin soul”, Nothin But Jam showcase their Latin heritage, with songs in Spanish, but take you on a journey through different sounds, from funky licks to jazz upstrokes to soft rock grooves to a full power pop sound, and one is just as enjoyable as the next. They’ve already made it through the first round of the Emergenza Festival and can’t wait to bring their eclectic sound to the stage once again – this time for the semi-finals at The Factory Theatre on the 2nd. Before the show they sit down with Emergenza to answer a few of our questions.

CAN YOU INTRODUCE US TO YOUR BAND NOTHIN BUT JAM?

NBJ (as we are often known) was formed in 2008 when a group of friends came together to “jam” and in the process found a way to incorporate their proud Latin heritage and celebration of life into music. In 2011, Rachel (a successful No.1 solo artist in Chile, Spain and parts of the USA) joined NBJ, brought her own songs to the band, and took existing NBJ originals to a new level of vocal professionalism. While three of the band members have South American heritage, Nick, the sole Italian, likes to remind us that, “Italians are the real Latinos !!!”

YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS SMOOTH ROCK WITH A LATIN SOUL. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO HAVE LATIN INFLUENCES?

All of us are proud children of migrant parents from Chile, Uruguay & Italy. Although NBJ has a natural slant towards Latin rhythms, the songs themselves have a unique fusion of rock, bossa nova, jazz & soul which, complemented with vocal harmonies & lyrics in both English & Spanish, make up the NBJ sound.

WHERE ELSE DO YOU DRAW YOUR MUSICAL INSPIRATION FROM?

The gift of musical expression and creation is motivation in itself. Our musical influences range from classic artists such as Cat Stevens, Van Morrison, Anita Baker & Santana, through to contemporary artists such as Jason Mraz, Maroon 5 & Joss Stone.

WHO WRITES THE SONGS AND WHAT ARE THEY ABOUT? WHAT'S YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE?

Christian & Rachel take their songwriting inspiration from life experiences and seek to convey our underlying band motto of “love, laugh, dream”. Our songwriting has no boundaries. It is deeply rewarding to see raw songs brought to the band come to life with the creative talents and input of all those in the band.

WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE FIRST ROUND FOR YOU?

The heats were a great opportunity to listen to some very talented bands and take our brand of music to a new audience. The venue had a great vibe, and despite our style being quite different to the other music played on the night, we gave it our best, connected with the audience and made it through to the next round.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO BETWEEN GIGS AND WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING TO PREPARE FOR THE NEXT PHASE OF THE COMPETITION?

NBJ has had a busy schedule of gigs including its most recent gig at the Sydney Hilton (Marble Bar) as part of their 120 year celebrations. We continue to add to our repertoire and are also bringing a new original to the semi-finals.

SO HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE EMERGENZA FINALS?

It is definitely a buzz to know we have a shot at making the finals. We will again give it our best.

HOW ARE YOU PLANNING TO PROMOTE FOR YOUR UPCOMING GIG?

Continue to promote the gig by word of mouth, at gigs and use of social media websites such as Facebook and Reverbnation.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST ABOUT THIS ROUND IN THE SEMI-FINALS?
Again we see this as another opportunity to bring our music to a new audience in a new loca
tion. And with the competition heating up, we will need to step up to a new level. We have our lead guitarist on board this round, which will certainly add another element to our set list.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO ENROL IN THE EMERGENZA FESTIVAL ?

We saw the Emergenza Festival as a great opportunity to widen our listening audience, but in particular it was a great avenue to work with a professional organization supporting original music as not many band competitions promote original only material.
