With a motto like “everything louder than everything else...” you can understand the kind of raw energy Cicada has. Heavily inspired by the Seattle grunge movement of the early nineties, they’ve got a strong set of original songs, that are as memorable as they are gritty and hard rocking. If you’re wandering about their name, it comes from a childhood anecdote of one of the band members. He once saved a cicada from drowning in his pool and put it in the sun to revive it, only to watch it get swiped up by a bird as soon as it took flight.
They thought it was the perfect, ironic metaphor for life as they see it. In January of this year, the band released their four-track demo, which you can stream on their Facebook band page. The Nirvana and Silverchair comparison they’ve gotten in the past is totally spot on, but you can also hear the melodic influences of The Foo Fighters shining through, particularly in the songs “Warped” and “Down”. They’re planning to follow up the demo in October when they hit the studio again to record their debut EP. Recording has been a good experience for Cicada who normally set performing as their main priority.
According to the band, performing live is everything. As they say, if they can bring power, emotion and energy to their live performance and let people hear something they’re never heard before, then they’ve done their job as musicians. They’re currently honing their live performance and have a whole new set list, including a brand new song, prepared for the semi-final battle at The Factory Theatre on the 1st. Their set is definitely one to look forward to, so don’t miss out.
