Harmony of Hate can’t wait to take their intense, raging metal show to the stage at The Factory Theatre, where they plan to battle it out to get to the finals of the Emergenza Festival. They rock an original mix of melodic and old school metal that will surely get you banging your head, so don’t miss your chance to see them then. Before the show, they talk to Emergenza about how the first round went, and what they’re looking forward to about the semi-finals.
CAN YOU GIVE US A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO YOUR BAND HARMONY OF HATE?
Harmony of Hate is a metal band based in Sydney's South West, mixing a blend of thrash, melodic and old school metal, with an intense live show.
WHAT BANDS HAVE INFLUENCED YOUR SOUND, AND IN WHAT WAY?
This is a hard question to answer as there are so many. I guess if we had to choose a few it would be the likes of Pantera for the raw power, Van Halen for the technical side, and also bands like Slayer, Testament and Black Sabbath.
WHO WRITES THE SONGS AND WHAT ARE THEY ABOUT? WHAT'S YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE?
We all play a part in writing the songs: the guitarist will bring in a riff as a starting point and the rest of the guys will add their parts, the band as a whole will work on sections ‘til they follow together. We’ve let more riffs go just because they don’t fit the feel of the song. Dave the vocalist then put his lyrics to the song, which are an extension of the emotion in the music.
WHICH ONE OF YOUR SONGS DO YOU THINK SPEAKS TO YOUR FANS THE MOST AND BEST REPRESENTS YOU AS ARTISTS?
Another hard question as all our songs are diverse, it’s hard to pinpoint just one song.
UP TO THIS POINT, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY HAS BEEN THE BAND'S BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT? OBSTACLE?
Our biggest accomplishment would have to be having three of our songs in the top twenty-five national metal charts on Triple J Unearthed for three weeks running.
WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE FIRST ROUND FOR YOU?
It’s always having the audience that’s never heard your music before and that are there to support another band screaming and getting into your songs- that’s what it’s all about- playing good music and having the audience coming along for the ride.
HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE EMERGENZA FINALS?
It’s cool- would have liked to have it judged from this round onwards as I think to get through the first round by crowd vote is fair but it should be judged on talent from there on.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR UPCOMING GIG AT THE FACTORY THEATRE?
Just playing on a stage where we have watched major international bands perform is a buzz looking forward to tearing up that stage.
WHAT'S A LIVE HARMONY OF HATE SHOW LIKE?
Intense, engaging, just makes you want to mosh, bang your head, and raise your horns.
WITH OTHER BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITIONS AROUND, WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE ON EMERGENZA?
The chance to represent Australia in Germany.
