Boson Higgs have already made it through the eliminatory round and are now ready to bring their mix of dirty blues and garage rock to the stage at The Factory Theatre, where they’re set to battle it out to get to the finals of the Emergenza Festival. Before the show, they let us in on what makes the band tick, how it went in the first round, and what they’re looking forward to for the semi-finals.
CAN YOU GIVE US A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE SOUND OF BOSON HIGGS?
Well it’s rock and roll, it’s dirty blues it’s a little bit garage… I guess it mostly about making music that gets people moving. There’s nothing more satisfying than playing a song that makes people jump around!
CAN YOU TALK TO US ABOUT YOUR MUSICAL AND NON-MUSICAL INFLUENCES OR INSPIRATIONS?
Our musical inspirations are mostly rockers that have a bluesy core. Classics like Jimmy Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, or modern bands like The Black Keys, Band of Skulls, and The White Stripes. As Jack White said “If you look far back enough into rock and roll, you’re on a freight train heading straight for the blues.”
WHAT THEMES DO YOU EXPLORE IN YOUR SONGS? WHAT'S YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE?
Some of our songs are about overcoming life obstacles and trying to better yourself. Others are a metaphor for dealing with the demons we all have from time to time. And then of course some of them are just songs about girls. I tend to write something fairly structured as the lead singer, and then take that to the band. Then we all work out how to make it sound awesome.
WHICH ONE OF YOUR SONGS DO YOU FEEL SPEAKS TO THE FANS AND REPRESENTS THE BAND THE BEST?
I would have to say “Rock and Roll Makes Me Wanna Love You”. It’s the kind of song that pretty much anyone can get into... and it’s a little bit sexy, so it’s good fun to dance to and great fun to play!
WHERE HAVE YOU PLAYED BEFORE AND WHAT WOULD YOUR DREAM GIG BE?
We haven’t been together for long, but we have played some pretty cool venues. Of course The Lair, Herman’s Bar, The Gladstone, The Crowie, Valve Bar, and one coming up on the 8th of November at Oxford Art Factory, which will be huge for us. Dream gigs would be pretty much any massive stadium, but if we got asked to play at The Horden, Homebake, or The Big Day Out, I think we would die happy.
WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE FIRST ROUND FOR YOU?
Just getting a chance to play a serious venue, it was definitely our biggest gig to date, and working with real sound techs and amazing stage setups was the bomb. Plus we got a pretty cool video from our mate Sean Torstensson as well.
UP TO THIS POINT, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY HAS BEEN THE BAND'S BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT? OBSTACLE?
Getting asked by the guys at The A & R Department to record was pretty huge. We should be hitting the studio in November so we’re super excited about that. I think the biggest obstacle is like most bands… just trying to stay together!
HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE EMERGENZA FINALS?
Fucking awesome. Can’t wait to play The Factory Theatre!
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR UPCOMING CONCERT AT THE FACTORY THEATRE?
Just the experience of playing one of Sydney’s great stages, and hopefully to an even bigger crowd than The Lair!
WITH OTHER BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITIONS AROUND, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE EMERGENZA?
Well Emergenza came to us I think! But the awesome venues that you guys lined up was a big turn on, and an amazing opportunity. Thanks Emergenza!
