GOOD GRIEFS: Catchy, Driven, Rock and Roll

Sydney band Good Griefs don’t let their young ages get in the way of putting on high-energy, engaging performances of their original grunge tunes

Named after the Foo Fighters’ song “Good Griefs” and self-described as “catchy, driven, rock and roll”, you can’t not be interested in hearing this band. They say what differentiates them from other bands is their honesty. They hide nothing, and play music because it’s what they love to do. And it comes out in their music. They’re certainly not one of those bands that prance around the stage, pretending to be rock stars, and yet lack a real connection to the music and the audience. These guys are all well versed musicians, and they feed off of the energy of their fans, saying that they do their best to “break down the barrier between the band and the audience as much as possible” in order to ensure a totally engaging, compelling stage show. Among their musical influences, they count Nirvana, Mudhoney and Queens of the Stone Age, not to mention the classic bands like the Beatles and the Stones who they were schooled on growing up. Back in 2011 they went in the studio together and came out with their debut EP entitled Not Rocket Surgery. And it’s a five-song explosion of melodic, technical modern grunge.

Any one of the songs could be a standout, although the intro to “New Age Fun” sets itself apart as the most poppy out of the bunch. Wait, did I mention they’re only 16 years old? It’s pretty incredible to think of what they’ve accomplished so far, and what all they’re capable of if they keep their minds set on their music. They’re set to battle it out at the semi-finals on the 19th at The Factory Theatre. Don’t miss out on your chance to see this incredible up-and-coming band.
