The Funky Licks of FLIGHT TO DUBAI

Flight of Dubai plays a wicked mix of funk and punk and will lay it all out to bare on stage at The Factory Theatre

The way Flight to Dubai describes themselves as the “love child of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Sex Pistols” is pretty right on the money. You really get the Sex Pistols feel that they were describing when you listen to their song “Deep End”, which you can stream on their Triple J page. It starts off with a “God Save the Queen” feel to the vocals, then oddly mid-way through the song, there’s a Flea-and-John Frusciante-style breakdown, accented by the lead singer’s voice, whispering nonsensical things in a strange language resembling Spanish, a la Beck. In their song “Fog”, there’s the ever present Peppers funk in the rhythm section, but a sort a new-wave approach to the vocals, which create slow, soothing melodies, before the singer breaks down into the chorus “So fuck me on the floor, fuck me…”. If you take even a second to look this band up, it’s obvious there’s no disputing the fact that they are totally awesome.

The general consensus is that Flight to Dubai kicks ass live, putting on a dynamic- at times theatrical, at times, in your face- performance of original songs that are just as easy to listen to as they are to slam dance to. After releasing two EP’s thus far, they’ve already got a third one in the works, entitled Hail Damage. Apparently they’re starting to cause a stir in the local music scene, getting regular airplay on independent radio stations. When confronted with the idea of playing in a huge open-air festival with artists the likes of Iggy and the Stooges, they say “What do we have to lose?” With a statement like that, you know they’re going to put their all into their live performance at The Factory Theatre on the 19th. Be there. What do you have to lose?
