If the name Tequila Mockingbyrd sounds familiar, it’s because the band says they took it from the cocktail of the same name (comprised of watermelon, lime juice, and of course tequila!), with which they share the same three-part dynamic. The lime probably comes from the seriously acidic hard rock vibe of lead singer and guitarist Madame Estelle Artois. Next to her, on bass is the fierce Mademoiselle Jess Riley, and on drums it’s Miss Josie O’Toole, who brings her hard-hitting percussive edge all the way from the “Motherland”. Those two easily put the “tequila” in “Tequila Mockingbyrd”. But, that leaves one question: who’s the watermelon? I don’t see much room for the sugary sweetness of that fruit in this all girl, power trio from Melbourne, with their seriously sultry vocals, not to mention kickass harmonies, sledgehammer bass riffs, and solid drumming.
Oh well, that will be a question for our next interview with the girls from Tequila Mockingbyrd. If you’re curious about their sound, think Joan Jett of the Wilson sisters from Heart. But, why take my word for it? Go to their band page and check out their debut EP yourself. I guarantee that you’ll be singing along with all the songs before the four-track album is over. They’re getting ready to hit the stage again at The Espy, this time for the semi-finals on the 19th. Don’t miss your chance to see this trio of talented ladies rock the stage!
