The Sticky Sweet Goodness of BINJUICE

Sydney band Binjuice hopes to win over their audience at the semi-finals with their sweet, sticky funk groove

If their sensuous self-description as a sweaty ball of funk doesn’t make you want to come running to their show, well they follow it up with the guarantee that their live show will be nothing less than catastrophic. They may not be that willing to elaborate on any of those ideas, but here at Emergenza, we allow the music to speak for itself. The technical bliss of instrumentalists The Shark, Stiegliz, Barn, C-Lice, and Giovanni Spa-fingers- we’re not really sure who plays what- is undeniable. With more than one member being a classically or jazz-trained musician, this band is not lacking in ability.

They’re not lacking in soul either. The Anthony Kiedis style grunting and Flea-like slap of the bass reveals this band’s deep, undying love for the grungy, salty funk of the Chili Peppers. If you want to hear it for yourself, you can stream their three-song EP Asthma Attack on their Bandcamp page. Each song flows right into the next, in an upbeat, groovy funk fusion. They’re hitting the stage again on the 18th at The Factory Theatre in Sydney, this time for the semi-finals. So, come on and get down with Binjuice. Just be aware of the physical risk associated with slam dancing and stage diving. Long live funk.
