    Exploring THE HOLLOWS

Before their semi-final show at the Espy on the 16th, Emergenza gets to know this young punk rock band a bit better

With the Hollows, you need only look forward to a high-energy punk show, with lots on stage jumps, and possibly some vegemite sandwiches to pass around. These quirky punk rockers are really geared up to get to the next round at the Hi-Fi and so plan to put their all into their upcoming show at the Espy for the semi-finals in Melbourne. Don’t miss out on seeing them then. Before the show, they chat with Emergenza.

FOR THOSE WHO DIDN’T GET TO SEE YOU IN THE FIRST ROUND, CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT WHO THE HOLLOWS ARE?

Well we (Hollows) are a five-piece hardcore/punk band from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. We've been together with the current line-up and material for just about a year. We like writing music, watching cartoons and eating Vegemite sandwiches.

WHAT’S A LIVE HOLLOWS SHOW LIKE?

Haha… well it’s interesting for sure. We like to move around quite a bit, lots of punk jumps, plenty of running around like headless chooks. Our vocalist (Kieran) is madder than a cut snake on stage.

WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE FIRST ROUND FOR YOU?

It was the first time we had all played together with the new line-up and new material so it was grouse to see that people enjoyed the jams. There was one dude chucking a head bang which was real nice.

OUT OF ALL THE SONGS YOU PLAYED, WHICH ONE GOT THE BIGGEST REACTION OUT OF THE CROWD AND WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?
Ummm… probably “Wander” or “Visions”, I guess. “Visions” is a pretty emotional jam that hits hard, so there’s usually a lot of power on stage when we play it. “Wander” was the closer to our set, and it’s quite a fast jam and ends in a cool way. I guess people will have to come down and check it out and decide for themselves… haha.

SO HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE EMERGENZA FINALS?

Tie me kangaroo down sport, we're stoked.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO BETWEEN GIGS AND WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING TO PREPARE FOR THE NEXT PHASE OF THE COMPETITION?
We've been playing as many shows as possible, writing lots of new material, and we're in the process of recording an EP. Just lots of practicing.

HOW ARE YOU PLANNING TO PROMOTE FOR YOUR UPCOMING GIG?

    Postpostpostpostpost…

WITH OTHER BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITIONS AROUND, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE EMERGENZA?

Emergenza had a good vibe to it. The opportunity to play at The Hi-Fi bar alone was enough of an incentive, so hopefully we can make it through to that round!
