    Unveiling MISCHIEVOUS THOM

Emergenza takes time to reveal the mystery of this mischievous band before their next gig at the Espy for the semi-finals

Mischievous Thom from Melbourne uses twisted analogy to describe their sound, making them just as mysterious as their name sounds. If that doesn’t pique your interest, they are willing to use “dirty” tactics to advertise for their upcoming gig. You can’t miss this lively band play live during the semi-finals of the Emergenza festival at the Espy on the 16th. Before the show, they entertain us by answering a few of our questions.

CAN YOU GIVE US A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE SOUND OF MISCHIEVOUS THOM?

What's our sound? We have to use the words folk, wit, and eels! Go! Our sound is a well-lubricated eel slipping between the deep ocean rocks of folk and alternative music with a sharp sardonic wit that captivates any audience willing to relax and go with the tide.

WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE FIRST ROUND FOR YOU?

The highlight of the first round was definitely the last band’s bassist running outside to grab a ciggy mid-song.

OUT OF ALL THE SONGS YOU PLAYED, WHICH ONE GOT THE BIGGEST REACTION OUT OF THE CROWD AND WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?

“So Unreal” probably got our best reaction just because of the raw energy that it gets out of us and its general funkiness.

SO HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE EMERGENZA FINALS?

Being one step closer to musical divinity HAS to feel good.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY HAS BEEN ONE OF THE BIGGEST OBSTACLES FOR YOUR BAND SO FAR?

The biggest challenge we have as a band is practicing with band members spread out up to 300km from each other. That and the regular fist-fights.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR UPCOMING CONCERT AT THE ESPY?

After this gig we hope to be inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... you can never aim too high after all.

HOW ARE YOU PLANNING TO PROMOTE FOR YOUR UPCOMING GIG?

We're hoping Jackson walks ‘round the city in a G-string singing our songs loudly. We're aiming to get a very specific audience. I mean flyers, gigs and Facebook are our backup.

WITH OTHER BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITIONS AROUND, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE EMERGENZA?

We chose Emergenza because it's an amazing idea. To give bands an opportunity to reach a new audience at all is great; add professional gear and technicians and a great group of managers and this competition is just amazing. Although, to be honest, we've been in other competitions too.
