Wooden Tongue admit that each show is a bumpy ride, but they always seem to make it through. Let’s hope they can win you over with their raw brand of garage rock and roll. They say they feel honoured to play on a stage where they’ve seen so many great acts play before them. So, better get down to The Factory Theatre on the 18th to see them live. In an interview with the band, they let us in on how the first round went and what they’re looking forward to most when it comes to the semi-finals in Sydney.
FOR THOSE WHO DIDN’T GET TO SEE YOU IN THE FIRST ROUND, CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT WHO WOODEN TONGUE ARE?
We are a Rock ‘n Roll band who started out as two guys playing loud garage rock in a cellar with a trashy recycled drum kit and a guitar amped way too loud. We are now a four-piece who play just as loud but with two other guys. We formed late last year and have been writing and performing as often as we can.
WHAT’S YOUR APPROACH TO YOUR ONSTAGE PERFORMANCES?
We're renowned for being unprepared. Our first performance was a three-hour set at a cougar bar and we had less than a week to put a set together. We barely get time to practice all together so our gigs are always unpredictable. It makes it exciting on-stage because we're constantly watching each other for spontaneous changes throughout songs. Our favourite track to play I'm pretty sure has never been played the same time twice. It's always a bumpy ride, but we get everybody to where they need to be.
WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE FIRST ROUND FOR YOU?
I think the highlight of the first round was making it through to the second round, but also it was the first time we'd played on a stage designed for live music so that felt pretty great.
CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE FIRST ROUND AND WHAT YOU LEARNED FROM IT?
It was great to perform with so many other musicians on the same night. Competition aside, it was just fun to watch some live music and perform too.
SO HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE EMERGENZA FINALS?
It feels pretty good. We're excited to play The Factory Theatre. We've seen some great acts perform there, and it’s awesome to be given the opportunity to perform on the same stage.
WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO BETWEEN GIGS AND WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING TO PREPARE FOR THE NEXT PHASE OF THE COMPETITION?
We've been gigging as often as we can. We had a residency at Moonshine Bar in Manly throughout August, which was awesome. We've been writing a bunch since the first round as well so we've got a bunch of new material for the next gig.
HOW ARE YOU PLANNING TO PROMOTE FOR YOUR UPCOMING GIG?
As far as promotion goes, word of mouth is all we got. If you've got a better idea be sure to let us know.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST ABOUT THIS ROUND IN THE SEMI-FINALS?
The competition's a little tougher this time ‘round which will make things interesting. I think mostly we're all excited to play at The Factory Theatre.
