Self-described as energetic alternative rock, and inspired by bands like Silverchair and Pearl Jam, it’s not hard to imagine that these guys have a powerful energy onstage. They’ve already played at The Barleycorn Hotel, The Blue Tile Lounge, and One Six One and will now debut their latest line-up for the Emergenza battle at the Espy. Don’t miss your chance to see this up-and-coming alternative rock band at the Espy on the 22nd. Before the show, they sit down with Emergenza to answer a few of our questions on the formation of the band, the inspiration for the name, and what they’re looking forward to most about the first round of the festival.
I KNOW THIS BAND HAS HAD SEVERAL TRANSFORMATIONS. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT HOW THE BAND ORIGINALLY GOT TOGETHER?
Well, both me and our ex-drummer sort of stopped at beginning of this year, and so we started to rebuild and basically went through like a heap of musicians until we found the right people, which we think we have now. Currently we a 3 piece with bass, drums, and guitar, but we’re still going to add an official vocalist and possibly a keyboardist or a cello player… we’ll see.
HOW DID YOU KNOW WHEN YOU FINALLY SETTLED ON THE RIGHT LINE UP?
It sort of just works, like every one gets on and the writing music becomes easy. Once you jam with a heap of people, you start to find people that you work well with. At this current stage we’re getting there, still not right yet, but pretty close to what will be our right line up.
WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION FOR THE NAME OVERSHINE?
We sort of just joined two words together and there’s the name. For some reason it reminds me of a tree and a sun.
IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
Energetic alternative rock.
WHERE HAVE YOU GUYS PLAYED BEFORE, AND WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM STAGE TO PLAY ON?
We played at the Barleycorn Hotel, The Espy a couple of times, The Blue Tile Lounge, One Six One, and a few battle of the bands events as well. Our dream stage would be somewhere our fans can enjoy themselves up close to the band.
WHAT CULT BAND WOULD YOU LOVE TO PLAY ALONGSIDE OF?
For me it would be Silverchair or Pearl Jam but all of us prefer different bands. We all sort of listen to different music.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO JOIN EMERGENZA?
A few our friends’ bands played in it already and so we did some research on it, and it sounded like a cool thing, so I signed us up.
HOW ARE YOU PREPARING FOR THIS STAGE IN THE COMPETITION?
Just going to rehearse and try to throw a few new ones into the set hopefully.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ABOUT THE FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE?
Just playing is my, and probably our, favourite thing about being in a band.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO GAIN FROM THE EMERGENZA EXPERIENCE?
Just general playing and gigging experience and hopefully building a bit of an audience.
