INSIDE REALITY Gets Real with Emergenza

Emergenza gets inside the heads of the guys in INSIDE REALITY to see what makes them tick and what might be in store for their audience at the Espy on the 20th

Thank the parents of this local Melbourne band for allowing their reckless teens to jam out as much as possible. Without their consent, you may never get the full effect of INSIDE REALITY. They’ve been in the studio recently working on three brand new tracks and in the meantime are scheduled to play round one of the Emergenza Festival at the Espy in Melbourne on the 20th. Don’t miss out on your chance to see them rock out live. In our interview with them before the show, we find out all about the formation of this band and the subsequent line-up changes. They also let us in on their ‘super-deep’ song-writing methods and what they think is the key element to their sound.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE HOW THE FIVE OF YOU GOT TOGETHER?

Well, our former lead guitarist and I had been jamming for a while until we finally decided to turn our jams into something more serious. Just then, by pure utter chance, we met our current drummer Zac, managed to start talking about music, and the fact that he played drums, and decided to invite him to jam. After that we basically went to practice as much as we could convince our parents to take us. We even played a few local gigs and a battle of the bands. We signed up for the Melbourne Young Guns festival, and finally realised at that point that we really needed a bass player, and fast. So we went on a desperate man hunt to find anybody that could play bass in time, and just a week before the show, we found a tall bastard who said he could play bass at our school, so we got him to come along to jam and he fit in quite well with everyone, so we thought why not? What Dutchy hadn't told us was that he had only picked up the bass moments before starting to jam with us, so to say the least he's improved since joining Inside Reality. A year later our original lead guitarist had to move away, leaving the band, and had to set our sights on rebuilding the band. First we met Dutchy's mate Tom, who just seemed to fit in like he'd always been there, and then, again leaving it right to the last minute, a week before our comeback show at Kate's Party, we met Zac's mate, Mitch, who I think I decided about half way through playing one song with him that I wanted him in the band, he fit in that well! So now we have the 5 of us, who I'd like to think are pretty good mates, we all hang out outside of band and just love playing the music we do together.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME INSIDE REALITY?

We needed a name and I wrote about half a dozen band names down on a sheet of paper and Inside Reality was the one we all thought was pretty decent so we decided to go with that and see how it took us.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE KEY ELEMENT TO YOUR SOUND?

High gain + high energy = maximum enjoyment for everyone including us

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SONG WRITING PROCESS FOR US?

Zac: Eat pizza and dick around until somebody makes a cool sound and then, bam, 20 minutes later a new song is written.
Sam: Then we generally play the crap out of the song until we feel it’s right

YOU'VE GOT LOTS OF VIDEOS OF LIVE PERFORMANCES ON YOUR YOUTUBE PAGE, BUT YET YOU SEEM TO BE HOLDING BACK ON RELEASING ANY STUDIO RECORDINGS. ANY PLANS TO HIT THE STUDIO SOON?
Sam: Yeah we have always tried to upload as much content on YouTube as possible, even when the band had just started, we thought it was good to at least have something out there, otherwise we'd just be another blank Facebook band page with a cool looking logo. We were also really close to recording a 5 track EP back in October in 2012, but our former lead guitarist, Corey, left to move to NSW, so we basically had to start the band again, rebuilding with our new additions, Tom and Mitch. But we were actually in the studio last weekend with an awesome guy named Brad Leask, who has got us one of the coolest guitar tones we've ever heard, so we will be releasing those 3 tracks very soon.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO JOIN EMERGENZA?

We wanted more opportunities to play gigs and we'd heard of Emergenza before so we decided to go for it, knowing any opportunity is a good opportunity

HOW ARE YOU PREPARING FOR THIS STAGE IN THE COMPETITION?

We are just treating it like any other gig in some ways, and in others not. We just will go in with the mindset that we are going to put on the best show we can, and any victory earned will be a bonus.

WHAT WILL BE THE KEY TO MOVING YOU FORWARD THROUGH ALL THE STEPS OF THE COMPETITION?

Dutchy: We are gonna take it stage by stage, because what's the point of thinking of the finals if we need to win the first rounds first.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO GAIN FROM THE EMERGENZA EXPERIENCE?

A great show, some new friends and maybe an opportunity to announce our upcoming EP.

WHAT'S THE CRAZIEST THING YOU'VE DONE TOGETHER AS A BAND?

Zac: Not so much as a band but me and Mitch get really fucked up and do some pretty crazy shit, like being that hammered I was asleep sitting upright in the middle of Glen Fern Road.
Mitch: Pissing on my friend while he was sleeping.
Zac: Letting somebody do a running head butt into my head whilst they were wearing a bike helmet and I had no helmet.
Mitch: Telling countless women countless filthy things.
Zac: Racing down steep hills on eski lids, pissing in my mate’s corona then him drinking it without realising it... this could go on for a long time….
