Melbourne band SONIC MILF CASTLE describe themselves as alternative punk rock. With song lengths close to five minutes, however, they definitely don’t fit the classic punk rock mould. Their intriguing melodies and upbeat guitar hammering don’t pigeon hole them into the punk category either. But there is definitely a punk energy in SONIC MILF CASTLE that you cannot dispute, particularly in the singer’s approach. Their recently released EP The Milf Rises explains it all. It starts off with “Raven”, whose gritty, up-rhythm guitar backups up the, at times, almost reggae, at times, slightly Alex Turner inspired vocal groove.
The second track “Mink” is another super upbeat song, which nonetheless possesses the same sort of dark, trance-like power of the first one, breaking down almost completely at one point into sparse pinging on the electric guitar, with just basic bass and kick drum for support; then it’s the bass that shines for a solid thirty seconds before the drums kick into a classic swing groove which brings the song back into its former rhythm. With pieces like this, you’re not going to want to miss the opportunity to see them play live. You’re next chance is at the Epsy on the 22nd for the Emergenza battle. Be there.
