Fun indie rock band from Sydney has been together since their school days, and even still uses the school band room for practice, but they have a much more mature sound now, with a full length album already in the works. They are really concentrated on getting experience playing live, and are totally geared up for their gig at the Lair this coming Friday. They’re super enthusiastic about using Emergenza as a platform for getting their music out there and gaining a larger fan base. As they prepare for the show, they take time out to talk to Emergenza…
HOW DID YOU GET TOGETHER AS A BAND?
We all went to school together. Our guitarist, Scott, and old bass player brought up the idea of starting a band at lunch one day. Two other friends jumped at the opportunity so we had two guitarists, a bassist and a drummer, however no singer. After about eight months of playing covers with a CD playing in the background for words, Scott Henry, our lead guitarist, heard Sean Loughland sing and snapped him up fast. From here we evolved a bit with members leaving and members coming. We have been operating as the band we are today for a bit now, and loving it so we are really working on an album.
WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION FOR THE NAME?
Back when we were jamming at our old drummer’s house, we used to cram into his garage for practice. Amongst fridges, Ping-Pong tables and red back spiders there really wasn't enough room for anyone, let alone five people plus instruments. Anyway, one day one of the guys who has a tendency to make up sayings said, 'Theres no room in here! We are packed in like a can of Puppets!!'. Anyway, we laughed for a long time as it made no sense and then decided we were The Puppets. It’s kind of stuck.
IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
Fun. Indie. Rock.
WHAT’S YOUR PRACTICE SPACE LIKE?
Luckily the school we went to are kind enough to let us use the band room on weekends. It’s a pretty big soundproof room and the acoustics are amazing so it sounds really good. Best part is, no screaming neighbours.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO JOIN EMERGENZA?
We are working on an album now and thought where a better place to start and get our sound out there than the Emergenza festival.
HOW ARE YOU PREPARING FOR THIS STAGE IN THE COMPETITION?
We have all our songs already written, we are just fine-tuning a few things for solos, build-ups and pauses. Just dotting the i's and crossing the t's.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ABOUT THE FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE?
I think we are really looking forward to a professional sound and set up. We have played a few gigs with big amps and set ups and they are always a lot of fun. Looking forward to a good crowd too.
WHAT WILL BE THE KEY TO MOVING YOU FORWARD THROUGH ALL THE STEPS OF THE COMPETITION?
We are more so focusing on getting our music together and out there for people to hear. We usually just get on stage and have fun, and the crowd responds well. I think as long as we have fun with it and we sound good, things could work out well.
HOW ARE YOU DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER BANDS, AND WHAT MAY HELP TO GET YOU TO THE FINALS?
We haven't really heard much of the other bands stuff, however I can say that we have a good sound with fun lyrics. On top of this, we have a tendency to get the crowd into our songs a bit. We are hoping everyone has fun on the night as well.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO GAIN FROM THE EMERGENZA EXPERIENCE?
Recognition and a good night.
