Self-taught, multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter Darby is super versatile, evoking many different styles, from American folk to melancholic electro pop. In her song “Runner”, which you can stream on her Triple J page, you can hear a definite influence of the great Tori Amos in her vocals, while the structure of the song is more reminiscent of modern songstresses like Adele. In “Peter Pan”, which you can find on her Facebook band page as well, she takes on a true American folk sound that, at times, recalls a sort of more rootsy version of the Fleet Foxes with a country cross-over vocal styling.
Her sound changes quite a bit from song to song, but the one common thread running through them all is her warm voice that carries her unique melodies smoothly over her evocative chord changes and soulful instrumental arrangements. When she’s not writing her own songs for her upcoming debut EP, or finding some stage to grace, she’s composing original instrumental pieces for the Sydney Film School. She showcases at the Lair on this Friday the 30th. You can’t afford to miss this great opportunity to witness a folk music star in the making.
