The Dark Prog Rock of SWAP

Sydney band SWAP creates their own brand of prog, with a dark, metal vibe and heavy hitting guitar solos

SWAP define themselves as metal prog rock, and it’s true that they have a very typical prog approach, incorporating technical guitar riffs, interesting time signature changes, and layered vocal harmonies. But there’s nothing frilly-collared about this band. They never exchange their heavy hitting guitar solos for other, more ethereal instrumentation. To boot, the main inspirations, aside from, maybe the obvious, Jethro Tull, are bands like Judas Priest and Metallica. Despite their retro influences, they are definitely riding the wave of modern social media. You can find them on MySpace, Triple J Unearthed, Facebook, and YouTube, where they promote, both a formerly released full-length album The Eye of the Beholder, as well as new singles off of their latest EP One of Us. The single "Follow the Leader" off of their debut album was featured on the compilation album "Jack, Jill & Coke: Vol. 1" and "Hollow" was featured on volume three of the same collection.

They’ve had success with airplay on Internet radio sites, including having their album played in full on "Prog Positivity Radio" broadcast in the US. All in all, they’ve got sufficient material out there to inspire you to come down and see them live at the Lair on August 29th. Judging from their video for “Not One of Us” on YouTube, which features a live, in studio SWAP performance, they are guaranteed to be killer.
