Up to this point, what would you say has been the band's biggest accomplishment?
It’s hard to decide, although something that stands out was in 2010 when We completely revised our style of playing. The then-current members Jacob, Alasdair and Mark attended a solo guitar clinic featuring Chris Brooks and Steve Paoli, and that night really changed the music we listened to and we then transitioned from playing Hardcore music to the Progressive Power metal that we classify ourselves under today. This style is much more complex and transitioning successfully from Hardcore to our current style is probably the most important accomplishment we have achieved in our history.
What do you think sets you apart from the other bands and might help send you to the finals?
Two things: First off we would say that our technical prose is above the average for bands our age and even older bands. The music we listen to (Dream Theater, LORD, Nevermore) is quite technical and influences our writing a lot. This will help us stand out from the other bands and give us a strong chance, should we make the finals.
Also, we are incredibly passionate about our music, and we show that on stage. We won’t just play a 20 minute set on stage, we are imposing 20 minutes of unrelenting energy on the crowd! This will hopefully help us stand out from the rest of the bands in the heats.
Is there one (or more) songs that you particularly like playing live? Why?
The Song “Euphoric Desolation” It is a contrasting song between heavier and clean sections. This makes it a song that can be played, and enjoyed regardless of the Audience Demographic. It can also be used as a gateway to our heavier tracks such as “Depraved” and “Oubliette”
Also, the Song “Depraved”. “Depraved” is a very technically demanding song. It is 8 minutes long and there is barely a dull moment. It is one of the few songs that has been recorded and made available to the public so the fact that the Audience can identify it makes the atmosphere more energetic whilst playing and that makes this song very enjoyable to play.
What are you looking forward to the most about the Festival experience?
Under Night’s Cover hasn’t played a show in nearly two years (due to internal reasons) and we are using the Festival as our “Comeback gig”. We are really looking forward to feeling the adrenaline just before we hit the stage again. We hope that the festival experience will help kick-start the next phase of the band’s career!
We are also looking to playing for, and with people who are incredibly passionate about live music and hopefully making some new friends backstage from the other bands!
What promotional means have you found to be the most efficient for you guys?
We are a relatively inexperienced band so we don’t have a strong answer to this one yet. But we have found that the actual music is the strongest tool. You can hand out flyers, put up stickers, plug your band on facebook or whatever all you want, but unless you can put a product in hands of the masses and really WOW them with what you have given them, you will never get people to come to shows, tell their friends or attract any sort of attention.
Which one of your songs do you feel speaks to the fans and represents the band best?
This is a hard one, but one of our newer songs, “Shadows In the Dark” is a great representation of Under Night’s cover. It was the first song that we wrote after a long time away from the band, so it had all our strongest ideas, but also due to the fact that it is a blend of face paced, aggressive riffing and slower more melodic sections in addition to a technical solo section, this song highlights most of what Under Night’s Cover has to offer.
