8 Bands rock out on a Friday night!

The Espy Basement - Melbourne - Friday 21st June 2013

    Eight Days of Autumn

The first band of the night was ‘Eight Days of Autumn’. These guys are only fresh out of high school but boy can they play! They are such a tight band for their age. Lead singer Jye’s vocals were clean and clear, leading his band through six up-tempo punk songs that had influences of ‘Good Charlotte’. Peter showed off his drumming skills in fourth song ‘Autumn Years,’ with some tasty double kick work. Rhythm guitarist Sam and bass player Matt provided solid support for lead guitarist Jye, especially in ‘People Can Fly,’ in which he played some nice finger tapping parts. In final song ‘Houston Can’t Solve Your Problems For You,’ the band got the crowd clapping along, which was a great way to end. Eight Days of Autumn kicked off the night with a perfectly tight faultless pop/punk set!

    Danish

This young band brought their fair share of young groovers to The Espy Basement, and they didn’t let them down! Playing a mix of Jazz, Indie and Rock with a groovy twist, they had the crowd moving along in no time! Fat Bass lines by Kieren laid the foundations for this band which consisted of keys, drums, guitars, vocals, and sax. Female lead vocalist Claire had a great singing voice and also played sax! Lead guitarist Joel punctuated the set with tasty licks which intertwined with Claire’s sax playing! Danish brought a happy vibe to the room and many people were wearing a smile after their set!

    The Stumpy Chumps

‘The Stumpy Chumps’ brought the biggest following of fans for the night to The Espy Basement. An unusual start to the band’s set with a rendition of happy birthday being sung to a friend in the crowd before busting into first song ‘Come Back Home’. The fourth song of the set was the highlight, starting off with a drums, bass and guitar jam before going into a funk-like tune. Lead singer Steph had a strong voice and plenty of personality as front lady! A diverse set from ‘The Stumpy Chumps.’

    Natural Bull Logic

‘Natural Bull Logic’ was next to hit the stage and there were quite a few things that caught the eye! First of all was the lead singer David’s batman cape, and secondly bass player Jack’s double electric stick bass! It would be easy to say that these guys are like Tenacious D, but that would not be giving them enough credit. Their songs and lyrics are more than comedy, they are well written stories that take the listener on a journey, not to mention all three band members could play their instruments very well! It’s difficult to find the words to explain the fourth song ‘Coffee,’ as all the words from the dictionary were used in the song! Lead singer David told a story at the rate of a million words a minute, which by at the end of the song had everyone gasping for air. It was quite a feat!
A very entertaining set from ‘Natural Bull Logic!’

    Prosthesis of Mind

‘Prosthesis of Mind’ was the heaviest band of the night! Heavy metal screamo rock! Lead guitarist Matt may well be one of the best guitarists we have seen this season! He constantly shredded in each song, but in his own original way! Drummer Dave and bass player Toby locked in, whilst rhythm guitarist Will gave good support to the lead guitarist filling out this bands sound. Lead singer Colin’s screamo vocals were truly unique in sound and delivery! One hell of a heavy set from ‘Prosthesis of Mind!’

    Elemental Burn

Heavy rock outfit ‘Elemental Burn’ were the next to hit The Espy Basement stage. They jumped straight into opener ‘667’ and got heads banging straight away! Sarah on female lead vocals’ voice filled the room, as lead guitarist Andrew cut sick on the guitar. The rhythm section was tight and you could tell that this band had been playing together for a while! On fourth song ‘Warmonger’ Andrew took the lead vocal duties for a change up. Final song of the set, ‘Reasons’, was a highlight

    Tequila Mockingbyrd

The nights only all girl hard rock band! They set the stage alight with their catchy tunes! It was obvious to the listener that these ladies have been playing music together for a while now because their sound, stage presence, and songs were very professional, tight, and well rehearsed! The crowd lapped up ‘Tequila Mockingbyrd’, with great applause after every one of their songs. Lead singer Estelle had just arrived back from an overseas trip, so to celebrate, the girls made a cake for everyone in the crowd to enjoy! A nice touch! Jess on bass and backing vocals locked in with Josie’s solid drumming technique and they powered through their set of seven songs in record time! A tasty set (pardon the pun) from ‘Tequila Mockingbyrd!’

    City Sharps

The final band of the night at The Espy Basement were ‘The City Sharps,’ and they certainly did dress sharp! They blasted through a set of tunes from their previous recordings, and The City Sharps’ loyal following was singing along to them all! Front man Chane was the most energetic front man of the night and he had the crowd in the palm of his hand with his antics. In fact, the whole band had plenty of stage craft and worked the room very well! Some very fine Rock’n’Roll from ‘The City Sharps!’
