Studying the sound of The Stained Angels

This brand-spanking-new blues-rock trio sits down to talk about how they recently got together and what their future may hold

Brisbane’s Stained Angels have been together for only about two months but already have a sound to be reckoned with. For now they are essentially an acoustic duo, set up with a temporary drummer, especially for Emergenza. The whole Stained Angels package was put together entirely for the festival, which just goes to show younger bands just how much you can accomplish in a short time, if you put your mind to it. These guys groove to a unique grungy, hippy blues vibe, with their set of extremely original tunes. The Stained Angels are a band that is not to be missed, so be sure to come down to X&Y on June 30th to hear them get down. Before the show, the lay it all out on the line for Emergenza.

HOW DID THE STAINED ANGELS FIRST COME ABOUT?

I met Sean at an open mic night, and I met Jasper and George through an audition for a heavy metal band. It didn’t really come about. It more so evolved over the last few weeks for this as well as for the springwood competition.

WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL AND NON-MUSICAL INSPIRATIONS?

I am speaking on behalf of myself (Chris). Musically it is to perform live on a stage with some room to move. Non musically, it usually involves outdoor activities and permaculture.

WHERE DO YOU REHEARSE AND WHAT IS THE STRANGEST OBJECT IN YOUR REHEARSAL SPACE?

We have rehearsed in the build-up to this competition in a band room around Bowen Hills. The strangest thing was a gigantic PA speaker that seemed too big to be powered by any current human technology.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC TO THOSE WHO HAVEN'T HEARD YOU BEFORE? WHAT IS THE KEY ELEMENT TO YOUR SOUND?
    Raw rock and roll.

HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT CREATING ORIGINAL MATERIAL?

Once again on behalf of myself (Chris), for this competition I wrote most of the songs. I usually write by making an irrational decision to go on an adventure and try to take a few minutes to sit down and put what I’m feeling to music.

WHERE HAVE YOU PLAYED SO FAR AND WHAT WOULD YOUR DREAM GIG BE?

So far we played at Springwood Hotel heat three for a battle of the bands, Out of 8 bands 2 were picked and we happen to be one of them. Personally I want to play at Woodford Folk Festival. That’s my dream gig.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO SIGN UP FOR EMERGENZA AND WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST?

I saw these annoying ads on YouTube that got me thinking, hey maybe I can put a band together in time for this. I'm just looking forward to playing this gig on the 30th and giving it my all...
