Learning the art of Artisan Kin

This Brisbane band dishes about all things Artisan Kin, including their formation, their inspirations, and what might ensure them a spot in the finals

The genre description of modern pop rock alt indie sums up Artisan Kin pretty well. They have a distinctly melodic sound, allowing for songs that will easily stick after just a single listen. No wonder they have over 1,000 likes on their Facebook band page. All in all, this is a solid band that you are not going to want to miss. So come down and check them out on June 30th at the X&Y in Brisbane for the 1st step of the competition. Before the show, they sit down to talk about the way they formed and what might set them apart from other bands throughout their journey with Emergenza festival.

WHAT'S THE STORY OF ARTISAN KIN? HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME?

Me and JD, the singer, used to write together years back, and we did quite a lot of shows and a few local tours when JD was a solo artist. David our drummer was in my last band E320, way back in the early 2000's, and Ray the bass player we have all known for years.
Me and JD were always writing songs together and one day we just decided to do an album. From there it was recorded entirely at my place, and a vocal booth was built in a very small room to do the vocal and instrumental takes on the album. After the album release, Ray and David joined the band after we got in touch with them, and it went from there. The name Artisan Kin I came up with one day thinking of an Artisan, someone who creates works of art with their hands, and Kin, as we are all related by this work of art, our music. So Artisan Kin was birthed.

WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL AND NON-MUSICAL INSPIRATIONS?

Musically, our influences slightly differ. Some of us like more rock pop, others fusion, jazz, funk, etc. But we are pretty much rock based. We all have various artists and bands we grew up with, and also have an emotional and musical attachment to, such as U2, Van Halen, Coldplay, Third Eye Blind, Live, Muse, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Jamiroquai, Linkin Park, The Killers, Kings X, Living Colour, Bruce Springsteen, Radiohead, Keane, Massive Attack, Phil Collins, etc., etc. Non-musical inspirations, well between us all, we admire authors, writers, artists, sports people, filmmakers, visionaries, etc.

WHAT IS YOUR REHEARSAL SPACE LIKE?

Our rehearsal space is an open room studio under a private house we go to every week or two and rehearse there. It is located centrally to us all, in a metropolitan area close to the city. It has been purposely built for rehearsing and recording and is a great live room to rehearse in. We have been to many rehearsal spaces and this one is the best so far. The acoustics are great, and as it is under a house, it is private, and you have a place to concentrate, work your ideas, and perform without any outside noise or distraction.

WHERE HAVE YOU PLAYED SO FAR AND WHAT WOULD YOUR DREAM GIG BE?

We had our album launch in April 2012, and it was quite a successful, independent launch with over 150 people attending in a decent sized venue. We also sold over 50 CD's so that was a nice boost for the band to start with. Since then we have played at various venues in and locally around our city, as our goal is to build a local audience and also garner a wider audience nationally and internationally through social media, etc. The dream gig is always the next gig, as we give our best at every venue and in front of any audience, but the chance to perform in a stadium one day would be a fantastic feeling, and forever memorable.

YOU GUYS HAVE A GREAT WEBSITE AND A LOT OF FACEBOOK LIKES. WHAT ROLE DO YOU THINK THE INTERNET IS PLAYING FOR YOU AS A BAND?
Thank you for your compliment. We try and keep our website up to date and relevant, and also market and promote through our Facebook page any chance we get. My background is graphic design, so I try to maintain a fresh perspective on the site. Plus our manager really keeps our Facebook and Twitter channels fresh and up to date. Technology and the advent of social media has made it much easier to reach a potential audience, especially for bands, though you now have to work smart, as well as hard and promote creatively via various channels, tools and mediums in order to effectively get your name and material out there. It allows you to create the branding behind who you are, and to define your vision and your target audience. It's a level playing field and the outcome is determined by the amount of work a band puts into their foundation, which has a flow on effect onto other platforms online.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO SIGN UP FOR EMERGENZA AND WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ABOUT THE FESTIVAL?
Emergenza really is an opportunity to perform from a local platform to a national launch pad, then the possibility to garner a new audience and vital promotion on an international level. The biggest unsigned band festival in the world is a great opportunity for any band to work hard, compete at a level playing field, and if successful, network and meet amazing people in the industry whom can truly make a positive contribution to the band. Plus it gives you the chance to meet new friends to build lasting relationships with and travel to some fantastic locations.

WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL ENSURE YOU A SPOT IN THE FINALS?

Nothing is certain but we try to stay focused on our material, give our best towards our live performance, to engage with people on an emotional as well as an audible level. We write melodic songs from the heart, which speak on a universal idea of love, hope, redemption and self-discovery in creative ways. We hope that these attributes and our experience in life and our musical backgrounds will speak for us and give us a chance to be in the final. Now that would so exciting!!
