Pre-show chat with What We’re Worth

This Brisbane band is psyched for their show at X&Y this weekend and shares a behind the scenes shot at how the band gets down

What We’re Worth has a seriously fat sound, with solid instrumentals and vocals to match. There’s no telling what they could come up with, given the right recording set up, but while you’re waiting on that, you can catch their live show at the X&Y in Brisbane this weekend. They’re pumped to get their music heard by a wider audience, not just those who define themselves as ‘hard-core’ or ‘pop-punk’. Don’t miss the chance to come out and support them on their journey to greatness, and watch out for their antics on stage as well. Before their show, they talk to us about their musical inspirations and give us an idea of what we can expect the 30th at X&Y.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU GOT TOGETHER?

Russell went to school with all the original members at some point in time, and Tayla and Michael used to jam together sometimes for funsies. Tayla and Russ talked about making a band for a while, and she harassed him enough to set up some jams and we went from there.

WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL AND NON-MUSICAL INSPIRATIONS?

Musical inspirations are bands like Four Year Strong, City Lights, Of Mice & Men, Blink 182 and Paramore. Tyson says his dad is his non-musical inspiration, but that's gay so forget about it.

IF YOU COULD CHOOSE THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC WHAT WOULD THEY BE?

    What We're Worth.
No, but seriously, "Energetic", "beards", and "fresh."

WHERE HAVE YOU PLAYED SO FAR AND WHAT WOULD YOUR DREAM GIG BE?

We've played places like Snitch at X&Y bar, Trinity Hall Church and Caloundra Community Hall. Just a bunch of local venues.
Our dream gigs would have to be Soundwave and Warped Tour. It'd be such an honour to get asked onto those shows.

WHAT IS YOUR STUDIO SPACE LIKE?

We practice in a rad little specialty coffee shop in Aspley called Cup From Above. It's got super comfy couches, really good coffee, and air conditioning. So good. Y’all should check it out!

WHAT IS THE CRAZIEST THING YOU’VE DONE TOGETHER AS A BAND?

We haven't really done anything crazy together as a band. The craziest thing that kind of happens with us is when Tyson tries to rape all of us, but Tyson...
one time a dude tried to fight Tyson right before a show, and then later was up the front moshing to our songs?

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO SIGN UP FOR EMERGENZA AND WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST?

Emergenza gives us another opportunity to perform in front of a different type of crowd and get some really good feedback and exposure. We want to show people that anyone can enjoy heavy pop-punk, not just hard-core or pop-punk kids.
