This Melbourne band has got the ambient thing down to a tight, upbeat science, refusing to sacrifice melody for pure experimentation. Their name says it all. Filled with shimmering guitar riffs, and the bass drum rolling the songs forward like thunderous clouds, this band gives you the ambience of a rain dance. And the indie rock Gods have rained down on us. Come join the ambient mood on the 22nd of June at the Epsy. The band sets the tone for us before the show.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE FORMATION OF THE AMBIENCE OF RAIN?
Well it all started over the website Melband actually, where a few of us were looking for a good group of people to play with. Then we all found each other through other friends. It’s a pretty lucky scenario because if anyone one of us were missing, none of this would of ever happened.
IF YOU COULD CHOOSE 3 WORDS TO DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
That’s a hard one because we all come from many backgrounds musically and therefore our songs can vary genre wise, but if we had to pick 3 words it would probably be Ambient Progressive Rock.
WHAT’S BEHIND THE NAME?
We were actually struggling for a while to come up with a name. I think it stemmed off of this idea where Alex recorded rain at the end of one of our demos and another time when we all sat down and tried to combine words that described our sound with rain and that’s what we ended up with.
WHERE HAVE YOU PLAYED IN THE PAST AND WHAT IS YOUR DREAM GIG?
We are actually pretty lucky that we’ve been able to play some of the places we have played considering we are a completely original band. We’ve played at Gertrudes Brown Couch in Fitzroy, The Penny Black in Brunswick, The Tote in Collingwood, Seven Club in South Melbourne, and Revolver in Prahran. In terms of a dream gig, I think it varies between all of us however, the Espy is definitely one and I think The Palais theatre is also one.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE ON JOINING EMERGENZA FESTIVAL?
I think we as a band are trying to get as much exposure as possible and we need to start thinking in steps of how we can progress forward. To be honest, Emergenza seemed like the perfect competition to do that. It’s a great opportunity for us and we are very thankful!”
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST ABOUT THE FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE?
This is definitely a big one for us! We are pretty much excited about everything to do with these gigs! We are looking forward to the vibe of the venue along with the crowd that comes with it! Oh and also playing JVM Marshalls, too… haha.
WHAT IS A LIVE AMBIENCE OF RAIN SHOW LIKE?
That’s also another tricky one. For us every time is a blast! We are all really good mates just having a good time and I think that spills over into the crowd. We try to put as much energy into our music as possible and I think it shows. In regards to our sound, dynamics and textures are definitely the key for us! I think it’s the hardest thing to control from venue to venue, because we don’t know what we are going to get acoustics and equipment wise.
