CHARLIE LANE ON HER SWEET SOUND

Local Melbourne cabaret-goes-pop act shares insight into her signature sound before her set at the Epsy this Sunday

Between her voice, which is both sultry and innocently child like, and her incredibly clever lyrics and vocal phrasing, Melbourne songstress Charlie Lane delivers a sugary musicality all her own. If you want to be part of a seriously magical moment, you’ve got to come down and see her dazzle the stage at the Epsy on the 23rd of June. She indulges Emergenza before the show by answering a few of our questions.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE EVOLUTION OF YOUR MUSIC?

I started writing when I was young, influenced by many sounds and by finding life humorous. I added this to my sets and lyrics. The sound is a mixture of different genres coming together.

WHAT ARE THE MAJOR INFLUENCES ON YOUR SOUND?

    Kimya Dawson, Soko, Kate-Miller Heidi

WHERE HAVE YOU PLAYED AND WHAT IS YOUR DREAM GIG?

I have played many gigs now, but to name a few: Bohemia Cabaret Club, The Espy, Laundry, Gertrudes Brown Couch.

WHAT SORT OF SET-UP DO YOU NORMALLY HAVE ON STAGE?

A 5 piece band with Kate on keys and backing vocals, Lewis on bass, Tom on guitar (electric), Micheal on drums and me singing lead vocals and writing the pieces.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE OF WRITING ORIGINAL MUSIC FOR THE INDIE FILM “SHEETS”?

It was a project I was working on with director and film student Sarah Camarota. I wrote the song with a friend Lindsay Chapman. We first watched the film then I added the end credits with a bit of editing on Protools as Sarah wanted a certain type of genre and influence.

WHAT PERSUADED YOU TO JOIN EMERGENZA FESTIVAL?

I was persuaded by Tom Jones, winner of Emergenza last year, in Rhys Crimmin's band.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST ABOUT THE FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE?

    Contacts, promotion, meeting fellow musicians.
