LITTLE RED CLAUDIA GETS REAL WITH EMERGENZA

This young Melbourne band takes a moment to talk with Emergenza before their gig at the Epsy this Sunday

Little Red Claudia is really a trio of talented male and female musicians. The guys keep up the bluesy backbone while the female singer fills every space with her often melancholy, and sometimes-epic, tales, based on everything from personal turmoil and abandonment to occupation of men by beasts. They are eager to taint the Epsy stage with their slow dark melodies. Before the show, they tell just one more story: their own.

HOW DID YOU GUYS GET TOGETHER AS A BAND?

Ilya was making music by himself as a hobby and decided to put his music up on Triple J were he got offered a gig. Ilya, thinking his singing wasn't good enough, decided to find someone with a much stronger voice and found Melissa Sammut online. Ilya, also needing another guitarist, bassist and drummer to be able to perform songs on stage, turned to his best friend Matt Spence for the second guitar, Peter Mayberry the bassist from his work, and Brad Shaw who was a former metal drummer in another band.

    WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?

Our Influences are Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns N Roses, Paramore, The Rolling Stones and the Animals.

HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT YOUR SONG WRITING?

Ilya and Matt are the two that write the music and lyrics, both writing their own separate songs while at work or whenever they have free time and then collaborating with Brad and Peter, as well as Melissa, to have a finished product.

    WHAT’S YOUR PRACTICE SPACE LIKE?

We practice in Ilya's living room in the house he's renting with his girlfriend.

    WHAT MADE YOU JOIN EMERGENZA?

More exposure as well as the opportunity to have our songs heard by a new audience and the chance to win a trip to perform live in Germany.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST ABOUT THE FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE?

Performing live in front of new fans and old ones at the famous bar the Esplanade.

WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL SET YOU APART FROM THE OTHER BANDS?

We have a unique sound, pace and set up and are quite hard to fit into a genre. Our music is deep, grungy but also catchy and has a way of seeping into people’s heads and making them want more.
