    CHILLING WITH SALAD DAYS

Melbourne band answers a few of our questions before rocking the Epsy stage June 23rd

According to Salad Days, they are a genre-less mix of different influences. But they don’t communicate confusion with their sound. They’ve got a garage spirit, which probably comes from their rehearsal set up, a garage. From that locale comes a polished sound that won’t disappoint. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness their high-energy performance on stage at the Epsy. They hang out with Emergenza before the show to answer a few of our questions.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHEN YOU SAY YOU’RE SWEET ENOUGH FOR THE GIRLS TO LOVE?

Our music has quite a hard rock sound instrumentally but I am a trained jazz singer. So the combination means you get a hard rock sound but with sweet tuneful melodies. This is what the 'sweet enough' comment is referring to. We are not limited to the standard rock genre.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR NAME?

The band's name was created by the guitarist Pat Pleash when he started the band (with different people then) back in high school. You'd have to ask him which one of the many reasons he has for choosing it back then but now the name sort of stands as a tribute to how much that band has evolved since those days. I personally dislike the name but also can't imagine it being called anything else.

WHAT IS YOUR PRACTICE SPACE LIKE?

Our practice space alternates between my living room and Rob's (the drummer) garage. I am in Brunswick St and he is in Albert Park so between us we pretty much have close proximity to every gig we play.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO DO ANY SERIOUS RECORDING SOON?

We would love to do more recording as the experience and feedback from doing our first single was very positive. Unfortunately we are all still relatively impoverished Uni students with limited time as well as finance. Most of us have sporadic travel plans that will most likely keep the prospect of further recordings at bay till next year. That isn't to say we might try and get another single out there but the possibility of an EP is probably far-fetched

WHERE HAVE YOU PLAYED BEFORE AND WHAT’S YOUR DREAM GIG?

We have played at places like 161, The Great Britain Hotel, Revolver and many other establishments around the Brunswick and St Kilda area. Dream gig for me would be to play at any music festival to a crowd of people that have never heard us before. It would be the ultimate test of our music's appeal as well as being bat-shit crazy awesome.

WHAT PERSUADED YOU TO JOIN EMERGENZA?

We signed up for the competition for a number of reasons. The first being just an opportunity to play at the Espy which is obviously a great location. Second, we had been rather successful in a previous 'battle-of-the-bands' like competition at Revolver where we won a number of prizes as well as expanding our fan base. Ultimately, I will consider this a success if people who didn't come to see us vote for us.

WHAT WILL SET YOU APART FROM THE OTHER BANDS AND HELP YOU MAKE IT TO THE FINALS?

I think what will set us apart from the other bands is simply our sound. People ask me all the time what genre we are and I don't have an answer for them because I don't really know myself. I think we have found a unique pairing between the instruments and the vocals that makes for an intriguing listening experience.
