In preparation for the May show Anchors of Tortuga chat with Emergenza.

A rare insight Sydney’s up & coming guitar trio with a smooth, melodic sound..

How would you describe your music and musical inspirations?
Our music has several influences, I guess we'd describe our genre as a mix of folk, blues and rock. Instead of the banjo you get in many folk bands, we have a very prominent blues guitarist and that dictates our sound quite a bit. Our musical inspirations are fairly varied, some of them include, City & Colour, Boy and Bear, Mumford and Sons, Matt Corby and Tame Impala.

What kind of live experiences have you had as a band or individually? Any major venues/shows?
We've played at different wine bars, restaurants and bars. Have also played in a couple of competitions, one of which we won and were lucky enough to get a days worth of recording at Sony. Recently we played a large outside gig at Sydney Uni which was great.

So far, what's been your band biggest success?
I'd say our bands biggest success is writing songs that we feel really good about and are proud to play to people. One future goal is to get these recorded so hopefully we can share it with more people.

What promotional means have you found to be the most efficient for you guys?

It's hard to beat Facebook as a promotional means. It's easy, it's convenient, it's free and everyone you know and more are on it. So for us that's definitely been our way of communicating with friends and fans. However we probably don't utilise it enough.

What are you hoping to get out of your participation in the Emergenza Music Festival?
Our goal for Emergenza is just to get one more gig of experience under our belts. We have played in these audience choice events before and are aware that the band that wins is normally the band that can get the most friends along to it. Bringing as many people as we can is not our goal for this one. We just want to get up there, have fun, gain more experience and hopefully people will like what we come up with. I don't think there will be many bands with a similar genre to us, so it'll be interesting to see how the crowd receives us.

Are there any dirty little secrets you can share about Anchors of Tortuga?
Dirty Secrets...our guitarist is a 118kg body builder, that shreds amazing blues solos whilst resembling a silverback gorilla. Does that count?
