Let’s all get this clear, folks. It’s “Fallin” Short. The misspelling is purposeful and that’s not all. These guys have a strong, confident sound. They’re tight, and there’s no mistaking that some of the younger bands this year better watch out for these guys. They take a moment to chat with Emergenza about the formation and direction of the band as well as some of their goals for Emergenza and beyond.
FOR ME, THE INFLUENCE OF CHRIS CORNELL ON YOUR SOUND IS UNDENIABLE. BUT, CAN YOU TELL US IN YOUR OWN WORDS WHERE YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION?
We have tried to keep a commercial sound while writing our music, allowing the guitars and vocals to stand out the front of the songs, with a solid rhythm section. We decided to cut back and steer away from the big guitar solo and concentrated more on guitar melodies. We have all come from prominent bands around the Brisbane scene and tried to stay true to our influences of Rock and Blues based music.
WHAT IS IT THAT BROUGHT YOU GUYS TOGETHER AS MUSICIANS?
Dave our bass player and John our guitarist formed the band after playing in a previous band together. After many attempts and auditions we managed to find Steve our lead guitarist. We had great difficulty finding a drummer and eventually got a drummer from Dave’s old band. Finally we held auditions for singers, and after several singer auditions, we settled on our line up.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS WITH THIS PROJECT? WHAT DO YOU GUYS HAVE IN STORE FOR US IN THE FUTURE? HOW CAN WE STAY UP TO DATE ON WHAT YOU GUYS ARE UP TO?
Our goals in the near future are to firstly get out and play as many shows to people as possible. We plan to go into the studios in June to start recording our first EP. We currently have our own webpage Fallinshort.com where people can hear our music, find out info on the band, look at photos and videos, and also subscribe to our monthly band newsletter. We are in the process in getting professional photos done, which will be added shortly. People can also check us out on Facebook, Reverb Nation, and Triple J Unearthed.
WHAT LED YOU TO ENROLL IN EMERGENZA?
We enrolled in Emergenza after the recommendation of our good friend Nathan Woodrow from Tall Poppies Studios.
WHAT PART OF THE FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST?
We are really looking forward to getting back on stage after such a long, tedious process of finally getting our band and music together. We can’t wait to get our music out to the public and hopefully get some really positive feedback. We would also love to be part of the finals section of Emergenza and hopefully even further.
WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL SET YOU APART FROM THE REST OF THE BANDS AND HELP GET YOU TO THE FINALS?
I think what will separate us from most bands is our commercial sound and our musicianship with the members of the band. We also think that the professionalism and tightness of the band will give our listeners a chance to see our great show and hear something fresh that the Brisbane scene has been missing for a number of years.
