The line-up for Melbourne’s second round of Emergenza competition on May 9th is stacked; bands from every genre promise to deliver a phenomenal show. While all of these bands are great in their own aspects, no one can compare to the years of experience For The Most Part has under their belt. It is this experience that had shaped their sound and honed their commanding stage presence. Despite a recent change in guitarists, For The Most Part is confident as they approach their debut Emergenza performances. Make sure you make time to come out and support this incredible band as they appear on stage at The Espy on May 9th!
SO, TELL ME, WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ENTER EMERGENZA FESTIVAL’S BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITION?
When we got the invite to join Emergenza through our Triple J unearthed profile, we had a bit of a research into the festival and were impressed by the organisation and detail that went in to it. Not only were we excited by the possibility of playing in Germany, but also being able to play in big Venues locally with many more possible fans being able to see us live. Also, one of the things that sealed the deal for us were all the amazing bonuses and promotions we get out of it.
YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN PLAYING TOGETHER FOR QUITE SOME TIME. HAS YOUR MUSIC EVOLVED OVER TIME OR HAVE YOU STUCK TO YOUR ORIGINAL SOUND?
Our music and sound has definitely evolved. We started off with no Keys/Synths & 2 vocalists (Jade-cleans and Me, Buggy-Heavy Vox) and we had much more of a Metal sound with influences from Heavy Rock/Hardcore. As we progressed through our first year we experimented with putting some keys to a couple of songs as I (Buggy) have been playing Piano since I was younger and we found that with the addition of the keys our sound was much bigger and more epic when we wanted it to be, but also we could drop off and go quiet and clean without having me (Buggy) doing nothing. We have chosen 'Fragile' as our first released recording as it captures this sound the best.
HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC?
We get asked this all the time and none of us really have an easy way of describing it as we have so many different styles as influences, for example I (Buggy) am from a Post-Hardcore, Heavy-Rock background, Jarryd (our guitarist and main song writer) is from a Metal, Post Hardcore/Rock background, James (Our drummer) is weirdly from a Heavy Rock, Country background, Jade (Our singer) is from a Pop/Rock background and Caleb (Our bassist) just kinda followed in the footsteps of his brothers (Jarryd and James). All of these elements show through in our music which is why it is hard to define us, but what we usually say if we're trying to keep it short is we're an 'Epic Rock' band and we sound like a cross between Evanescence, 30 Seconds to Mars and Linkin Park.
YOUR MUSIC IS VERY UNIQUE IN THAT YOU BLEND CLEAN VOCALS WITH SCREAMS ALMOST EFFORTLESSLY. WHAT IS THE KEY TO MESHING THESE TWO EXTREME VOCAL STYLES?
They key? Haha, that's a hard question. Well I guess the first time we really felt like we got it right was when we put me (Buggy) on keys which allowed us to leave screams out of long, major parts and only put it in parts we really needed it. The other major factor would be when we write lyrics, generally Jade, James and I will write lyrics (separately & together) and we try to write nicer, flowy lyrics when we want cleans and more harsh, angry lyrics when writing for screams. Ultimately we endeavour to be the band that brings screamo mainstream, so we are stoked about the feedback from people saying we blend the two vocal styles together seamlessly and people who don't normally like screamo are loving our stuff.
WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE INSPIRATION FROM WHEN PRODUCING YOUR OWN, ORIGINAL MUSIC?
Well our guitarist (Jarryd) is usually the one to come to practice with anything from a single riff or an entire song and he has this unique outlook on writing where he feels like everything he writes will be used as the theme song for a super hero or action movie. Then, as I explained earlier, we all put our own spin on our parts from our individual influences and then we also will look at everyone else's parts coming up with ideas of our own for the others' part(s) if we feel its needed.
WHAT SHOULD AUDIENCES EXPECT FROM YOUR FIRST EMERGENZA PERFORMANCE?
Epic yet calm songs, brutal and neat vocals, clap along and jumpy riffs, catchy lyrics, an active stage presence with guitar and bass flips with chilled out sections. Basically the original contrasting we're known for in our music, but conveyed live on-stage.
