On April 13th, Cicada makes their debut Emergenza performance on the legendary stage of The Metro in Sydney. Hoping to follow in Cuervo’s footsteps, Cicada has their eye on the ultimate prize. They have spent over a year perfecting their craft, all in an attempt to revitalize the classic 90’s grunge rock. Adding different elements from rock gods, like Nirvana, coupled with new influences such as Foo Fighters, Cicada has a sound that is distinctly their own. Be sure to come out and watch these talented musicians bring grunge back to life!
HI GUYS! SO, WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO PARTICIPATE IN EMERGENZA FESTIVAL?
After coming to watch the final last year at the Metro and seeing my friends Sid and Sam from AIM's band Cuervo win first prize I knew it was something that I wanted to do straight away, the atmosphere and the potential it has for up and coming bands was too good to pass up so as soon as this years festival started, I entered Cicada straight away.
HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC TO SOMEONE WHO HAD NEVER SEEN YOU PERFORM BEFORE?
We are massive fans of music from all different types of areas from Zeppelin to Lady Gaga but ever since I heard the drum intro for Breed off Nirvanas Nevermind I knew I would be influenced by the grunge genre. We take grunge influences and incorporate them with more modern rock styles like the Foo Fighters or Seether. A guy who heard our EP from Utopia records in the city who opened for Nirvana in 1992 when they toured Australia said a couple of our songs sound like ones Nirvana forgot to record. We think we sound like what would happen if Silverchair, Nirvana, Seether and the Foo Fighters had a love child.
EMERGENZA PUTS A LOT OF EMPHASIS ON ARTISTS PROMOTING THEMSELVES FOR THE COMPETITION. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE IN ORDER TO PROMOTE FOR YOUR FIRST EMERGENZA PERFORMANCE ON APRIL 13TH?
We have been mainly using social media, selling tickets but also incorporating T-Shirt and EP packages to get people into supporting the band. Everyone knows what a big gig this is and the Metro sells itself so promotion hasn't been too much of an issue.
DO YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS GOING INTO THE COMPETITION?
Not really concerns more just excitement about being able to get our music to such a large audience, it's a great opportunity for any band and we just can't wait to get up on that stage, I mean we have seen so many great bands play the metro we are stocked to be able to share a stage with rock royalty.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE 30-MINUTE SET LIMIT?
30 minutes is a little shorter than we are used to and we had to make some tough decisions on the set list but it's good in a sense that you can come out guns blazing with your best songs. Having no time to warm the crowd up or yourselves will definitely show who has stage presence and who doesn't.
WHAT ARE YOU GUYS LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST IN REGARDS TO THE COMPETITION?
I think for us getting all of our friends down, those who have seen us play before and those who haven't to such a good venue is something any band would love. But it's playing our music to a whole lot of people who have never heard us before that we are really excited about. We recently wrote 3 new songs since the release of our EP and we are itching to play them live, we really think they will get the crowd rocking out. And of course there is that little thing about the possibility of going to Germany haha that would be a dream come true, to travel the world playing our music. That's any bands goal.
