Interview with the boys from Cartoon Physics.

A quick chat, offering us some insight into what makes the band what it is.

When did you form your band?
Sam and I had been writing and recording for a while. We actually self-released an album in 2009 before putting the live band together. We completed our line up in 2010 when Simon joined on drums and Jimi joined on bass.

What inspired you to make music together?
Sam and I have been playing together since the 90's. I guess all four of us are inspired by the bands we love, inspired to try and climb, or fly, up into those lofty heights and do our best to try and create some timeless music like those great people that came before us.

What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs?
I don't tend to write about myself much. Most of my lyrics are outward-looking. Talking about the world out there and what I perceive as being wrong with it, or right with it - mostly wrong with it I guess. Some of our songs touch on themes like environment, materialism and sexism, but I try not to hit people over the head with my little musical rants. Generally I guess I try and frame things in a way that paints a picture, rather than blatantly chant some sort of slogan. We have our love songs too. Some of our songs are little vignettes about made-up characters that have something happen to them. I guess more of our songs are sad than happy. Oh well.
What do you like most about playing live? I think the best thing about playing live for us has been watching ourselves get better at it. Being able to look back and realize that you've made progress. That where we used to be terrified about making mistakes or embarrassing ourselves, now we're confident enough to just play and channel the passion or energy of the song into the moment. That's the great thing about live performance I suppose; the sharing of that unique moment with an audience and the rest of the band. Letting inhibitions go and just channeling and sharing that energy.

What promotional means have you found to be the most efficient for you guys?
There is a small venue in West End that recently closed down ... sadly. We played there fairly regularly and I know some of the regular punters recognized us and, I think, looked forward to us playing. So I guess I'm saying that what has worked for us in terms of building an audience has been playing good shows at a regular venue. If only there were more venues in our town it would make it a lot easier. As it stands I think there must be a thousand bands in Brisbane for every venue booking live bands. It's frustrating.

Which one of your songs do you feel speaks to the fans and represents the band best?
I think the songs we're working on at the moment, and are yet to add to our live set, would have to be our best songs so far ... but of the songs that we've shared with audiences ... if I have to pick one I'll probably pick "This Fire". It's one of our heavier ones. We get to let loose a bit more on that song than most of the others and the audience often seem happy to come along with us for the ride.
