Catching up with Australian national finalists, Throw Catch

Local Sydney band, Throw Catch, speaks about their progression through the different stages of Emergenza Festival

Recently, I was able to chat with the members of Sydney band, Throw Catch. These guys are masters in the art of promotion, which they use to further spark the public’s interest in their powerful rock music. With incredible music as a strong base and an innovative marketing scheme as a tool, Throw Catch is definitely a band to watch out for!

FIRST OF ALL, CONGRATULATIONS ON MAKING IT TO THE NATIONAL FINAL AT THE METRO! I’M SURE YOU GUYS WERE STOKED TO BE ABLE TO PERFORM IN SUCH A NOTORIOUS VENUE. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE NIGHT?

It was awesome to see the crowd singing along and jumping about. Playing at the Metro was great, but that crowd definitely made the night. So much energy!

I NOTICED ONLINE THAT YOU GUYS REALLY PUT AN EMPHASIS ON PROMOTING YOUR BAND THROUGH FLYERS, POSTERS, AND T-SHIRTS. HOW WOULD YOU SAY THIS AIDED YOU IN THE FINAL?

It got more people talking about the gig. Really generated a good buzz. We also had a lot of success with our “No Exceptions” CD sampler that we recorded. You can listen or download it from Soundcloud ( https://soundcloud.com/throwcatch/sets/no-exceptions-sampler ).

THROUGHOUT YOUR PROGRESSION THROUGH THE COMPETITION, YOU WERE ABLE TO PLAY AT SOME AMAZING VENUES LIKE THE FACTORY AND THE METRO, HOW WAS THE ATMOSPHERE DIFFERENT AT THESE CLUBS IN COMPARISON TO OTHER PLACES YOU HAVE PERFORMED?

The atmosphere was very intense. You definitely need a good crowd to get the most out of those venues. We had a really solid turnout so we had a blast. Putting the work in to promote the gig is definitely worth the result.

EMERGENZA IS UNIQUE IN THAT BANDS FROM ANY GENRE CAN PARTICIPATE. HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR OWN MUSIC SET YOU APART FROM ALL THE DIFFERENT MUSICAL STYLES PERFORMED AT THE FINAL?

Our music is all about solid riffs, powerful vocals and high energy mixed with a good dose of distortion. You want to sound different but not so different that you polarise your audience. There were a good number of bands on the night who played a brand of music symbiotic with ours and we’d love to play with them again.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE MOST BENEFICIAL ASPECTS OF PARTICIPATING IN EMERGENZA FESTIVAL?

It gives you a great reason to promote your band. A lot of people were stoked to see us at the Metro Theatre in the National Grand Finals. Being at such iconic venues was an excellent experience for us and our fans.

IT SEEMS LIKE 2012 WAS A BIG YEAR FOR YOU GUYS, WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

Right now, we’re working on some new songs and planning to record some more. We will be playing some shows around Sydney in the coming months, with a couple of very special gigs coming up (that’s all I’m saying).

Also, our new bassist Dave has joined us and is replacing Tom who was filling in for Emergenza.
