AUSTRALIAN MUSIC AND THE REST OF THE WORLD

FINALLY BEING RECOGNIZED THROUGHOUT THE GLOBE WITH SUCCESS STORIES!!

GRAMMYS, PRIME MINISTERS AND MUSIC.... Yes, these 3 subjects have something in common but let's start from way back. Let's talk about the Aussie music scene first. Most of us knew about that the Australian music scene is good and that the talent is rife. We at Émergenza have been saying this for the past 6 years.

We've been actively looking for that one band that everybody can be excited about. Years ago, the first one was a punk rock band by the name of The Vandolls. After establishing themselves in England following their stellar perfromance in Germany, they built a good, sizeable following in the south coast of sussex and even toured and played Poland and other countries. Internal fighting and 'musical differences' really made that impossible to carry on but that's another story all together.

This band could have been something but fate didn't really make it happen. Still, they are really young so they have time now that they are experienced. Others followed and toured, Switzerland, Germany and Other strange and interesting frontiers. Labelle, Rhys Crimmin to cite a few and these are and were our own babies. Proud to take these amazing unsigned bands to the old continent. The Australian music scene we said is great. To talk about what has come out of Ausralia lately we would need a week to write about it but I will cite 2 fine examples: Gotye and Tame Impala.

Now, considering their stellar success stories it's only fair we tell you about how hard these artists work. Gotye I did see at CMJ, a smallish showcase in New York city. Between a drink or two with the Australian delegate from the arts council and 'music australia', a small goverment department I was invited to see this guy whose voice reminded me of sting sometimes. This guy did get a grant from the goverment like many others did on the special Aussie showcase. This guy was Gotye. Member of Sonicbids, our good old partners and friends, for the past 6 years and hardest working songwriter on the scene. Fast forward a few years and what you get is an Australian based artist that won 3 Grammys. That is not just a feat. That is fucking amazing. Like it or not, his song was everywhere.

Kimbra, his girl sidekick on that single, was at another showcase, South by SouthWest in texas and I did see her too separately. While I was out pitching Aussie, British and Canadian bands I got to see the artist before the fame and trust me, it is down to hard work. While everybody is talking about this and taking glossy pictures of them and putting their name all over the cool papers I can say that hard work pays off.

When the Prime Minister of Australia jumps on the band wagon (mind you she did cough up a few grand for these artists to showcase outside OZ) and give all sorts of praise you know you've done it! Another band we saw at varous barbeques/showcases was Tame Impala. A few years back we saw them at The Great Escape Showcase while we were getting sloshed. Professionally sloshed I might add. Yes, because once again we were pushing bands down publishers throats. Once again, it is down to work, work work. Without a band's promotional strategies and right 'channels' you get little results...... Now excuse me while I go and prepare for the NME awards where Western Australia's finest, Tame Impala has been nominated. We hope to see you soon up there as well!

P.S. Somebody please tell Julia Gillard that if she wants to mix with musician superstars, she needs to cough up more cash for music or at least go see the Émergenza Festival!
