Interview with Australian national finalist, The Usual Suspects

Originally formed in 2010, this young band has proven themselves on the stage of Sydney’s legendary Metro Theatre.

Despite the pre-apocalyptic weather conditions that were plaguing Sydney at the time, William, Alex, Jackson, and Andrew found the time to speak with us. This is an article you will want to read and a band you will want to follow.

    • How long have you all been together as a band?

Alex Powys: Our singer and guitarist, Jackson the drummer, Alex and bass player Will, formed the band halfway through 2010. Jackson then told us that he had met an old friend and asked him if he wanted to play guitar for us, this was Andrew. We met up with Andrew, jammed with him and started doing performances late 2010. It all clicked from the beginning really.

    • How would you best describe your music?
Alex Powys: We would best describe our music as pop/indie rock.
William O’Donohue: At the moment our biggest influences would be bands such as Two Door Cinema Club and Kings of Leon, that's kind of where we want our sound to be heading.

    • There are several videos of covers you guys have done, are you working on your own original songs as well?
Jackson Besley: Yeah, pretty much our whole set is compiled from original songs now, we much prefer to perform our own songs now.. a few covers here and there for certain gigs but originals are our main focus!

    • What led you to participate in Emergenza?
Alex Powys: A worker from Emergenza had found us on Triple J Unearthed and asked if we wanted to compete in the festival, so we gave it a crack. It shows that the Emergenza team are really on the ball.

    • What is your favorite type of gig to perform at? (Outdoor festival, club, etc.)
Alex Powys: We haven't exactly experienced any outdoor gigs so we have adapted to indoor concerts like the ones we played with Emergenza festival, we really enjoy them.

    • In your opinion, what sets your band apart from others in the competition?
William O’Donohue: I guess what sets our band apart is that we are young, we have a different sound and we have a great frontman which we all agree is pretty special.

    • You guys are pretty young compared to other musicians participating in Emergenza, do you think this makes things more difficult or gives you an edge?
William O’Donohue: People do like to see young musicians having a go, I guess that gives us a bit of an edge, but being younger we lack the experience and comfortableness on stage that some of the older bands have. but all that stuff takes time. Emergenza did help our confidence though.

    • We saw online that you all were working on an EP, any idea when that will be ready for release?
Andrew Stevens: We have done multiple recordings of our original songs and we have planned to do some more, hopefully completing our first EP this year.

    • We saw that you played at the Metro theatre, unfortunately we have never been there but this seems like a phenomenal venue with lots of history and a lot of events coming up that we would like to go to. Can you tell us American girls how it felt playing there?
Andrew Stevens: The performance at the Metro was our favourite gig so far. Everything from the venue to the equipment, having all our friends and family there to see us. Competitions for bands can be tough but all in all it was definitely a great experience for us, especially at our age. The Emergenza competition was an incredible experience and it took us to the Metro. Which is special.
