With a packed concert schedule over the last few weeks and a very important show on the horizon, the three lads of The Ugly Kings have been quite a busy bunch. They play a variety of shows to keep their fans interested and entertained, including an acoustic show and a show in collaboration with a few other local Melbourne up & coming bands. In December, they will take the stage of the HiFi alongside 13 other bands for the final round of the Emergenza International Festival.
In the ultimate display of fan loyalty, someone has turned one of the band’s songs into an mp3 file which can be used as a ringtone. How much more love can a band hope for? The already successful trio has a profile on every major emerging band forum and is hoping to break 500 fan likes on their Facebook page. Their semifinal show for the international battle of the bands was very successful and they are now working at their band promotional strategies to make the final show victorious.
In stark contrast to most rock bands, the only member with a mic is the drummer. A drummer-lead singer role is no easy feat, but the gentlemen taking this responsibility for The Ugly Kings make it seem quite easy. His drumming misses no beat and remains in perfect synch with the bass, creating a resonating rhythm section, all the while putting forth flawless, melodic vocals. A complex, intricate mix of rock, country blues and alternative beats come together in their music and each of those genres has a place in the well arranged pieces. Lady Bird is a strong example of that, whit the vocal carrying most of the ‘blues’, while the melodies and intros seem to fall in the other categories.
