In a clever mix of languages, Classik Nawu have come up with a band name that means classic music – as in, music that will never be out of style, but that can also be read as classic now – as in right here, and just for us. Resulting from the merging of four musicians with very diverse origins and backgrounds, Classik Nawu’s music reflects every nuance of what such a merge might entail. Their uniqueness and oomph were well recognized by the audience at Brisbane’s semi final round of the Emergenza Festival, where the band won over more votes then any other – a whooping 129!
They will now compete in the final round of the international battle of the bands, for a chance to play the final show in Sydney, and then – the international music festival the Taubertal. The band who’s been together since 2010 have already played some of the city’s most important venues and made great strides in terms of marketing their up & coming band. They played an awesome show at HiFi in October and will need to bring the same energy and stamina to their final show.
In a not-so-classic combination of hip-hop, R&B and reggae, Classik Nawu have brought a sound that is often ‘contrived’ in today’s music and given it a fresh, personal feel. The harmonies in the songs are flawless and the inclusion of live instruments like the bass, guitar and drums add to its authenticity and musical merit. The funky sounds of How We Live testify are a true testament to this instrumental authenticity. The vocalists showcase their versatility with harmonies as well as rapped segments to a fantastic instrumental backdrop. There’s something a little 90’s to their sound – something enjoyable and gripping.
