The first finalists to be chosen to Brisbane’s final, Mo’s Religion are a talented group of musicians with a unique sound and superb songwriting. They put on a great show and swept into first place during their semifinal show on October 16th. Four gentlemen and one lady have come together to form this band which, in their own words plays an eclectic mix of styles which they’ve called ‘alternative indie rock folk’. A few moments of listening to their music and you can see exactly how they’d come up with that name.
Their fun up beat style combined with a great live performance won over the crowd and other musicians alike. MO’s Religion is not just a great band with good music but they’re a strong online presence as well. With profiles on all of the major up & coming band forums as well as a website, it’s easy to find them online and quickly access a sampling of their music. The number of tunes they’ve got available online is impressive and a super important tool in band promotion. This will prove particularly useful when they & other bands are promoting their final show.
Even though MO’s Religion is still an ‘emerging’ band their strength lies in the fact that the musicians are experienced and know how to work their instruments, vocals and arrangements. The instrumental intro to I Didn’t See is a great example of this. Allowing each instrument to come into the piece slowly presents an opportunity for each musician to feature his strength before being joined by the melodic vocals of the lead singer. Keeping with the tempo the bass comes through and just the right moments, making for an easy to listen to, harmonic piece. Their low key style is less often encountered a battle of the bands event and I hope they take advantage of this and blow the crowd away at the finals.
