CRITIC’S CORNER: THE VERDICT ON ALL THE BANDS

Once again this year, we take a deep breath and can finally relax: another year, another great success. The International Final of the Emergenza Festival went without a hitch. Sure, there was the usual range of emotions: wild enthusiasm, some deceptions, intense emotions and welcomed post-show relief, and of course elation and the taste of cool, frothy beer... 26 finalists, 10 European countries and also Canada, here to give us sounds covering the whole spectrum. All gave it their best, some aimnig to win and all wanting to be remarked. We say thank you and congratulations to all of them for their dedication to music and their determination to be heard. Here then is our impression of each of them; we invite you to check them out and encourgae them on their way along the path to success. Band: Bist From: Germany – Munich Review: Under the beating sun the first band took centre stage, a rapt applause greeted them. The set up was far from standard with drums sustaining a constant and captivating rhythm. The addition of the scratch added to the overall originality and crossover of genres. The set: Stage presence was good with a set which seemed to have a tough process behind it and which showed the band’s versatility and coming of age of the band. Best Song: Beautiful Lies Genre/Style: Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit Votes: 2.5 stars Band: Jove From: UK – London Review: The strongest aspect of Jove is the singer, who has a very powerful and dynamic voice. The band know this and use it to maximum advantage. They opened their set with a traditional rock song, very energetic and nostaligic, to then go on to fuse (at times) blues and fusion. The Set: As previously mentioned the set really concentrates on the potential of the lead singer. The rhythm section consists of off beats which at times can risk the loss of feeling that is waiting to break out of the songs. The guitarist and bassist tentatively play around with solo’s with which seemed to gain more confidence as the set progressed. Best song: Rain in my overcoat Genre/Style: Ben Harper e Gomez, per gli spunti della voce solista. Votes: 3 stars Gruppo: BKS From: Svizzera – Zurigo Review: The instrumental intro has psychedelic undertones, reflects the set: chilled out and as relaxing as a Swiss city. Orchestral influences are apparent but do not strike as being too original. The female singer is a good choice but the dated genre they play is suprising, as the band members are of a young age. The set: A good stage presence with good execution of the songs. The only point to comment on is that they don’t seem to transfer the energy and emotions to the watching public. Best song: the second…. Genre/Style: some pages of symphonic rock of the late seventies Votes: 2 stars Band: Broken Pictures From: Canada – Montreal Review: The guitar riffs and arrangements work brilliantly. They are captivating and very easy to listen too. The rhythm section is well rehearsed though a tad predictable. All in all, the band are solid. The Set: It would seem not enough care has been taken in the arrangement of the set. It finally begins to come alive after the 3rd song. More attention should be placed on this aspect. Best song: Washing machine Genre/Style: Matchbox Twenty Votes: 2 stars Band: Adrenalin From: Germany – Koln Review: The beginning of the set promised much but seemed to lose its direction. Unfortunately, the initial originality displayed in the opening song did not last through-out the set. The energy and stage presence masked the inaccuracies in the playing. The set: A great deal of attention is placed on the lead singer who seems to revel in the limelight and manages to involve the audience. In conclusion, following this advice, in our opinion, will help them become a more original band. Best song: the second…. Genre/Style: Foo fi
