    À LA UNE
Hailing from an often over-looked music scene by industry insiders, Counterpunch has set out to cement the city’s credo as “the Second City” in an entirely different way; second to none. Now a vibrant and overactive catalyst for a seemingly endless amount of great bands, the Chicago music scene is taking charge.
Counterpunch formed in the fall of 2003 from the ashes of Chicago mainstays Last Man Out, TwinHaters, and All Else Fails. Under the name Dear You, Ross Michel (Every Light Red, drums) had begun recording material for a solo project and was looking for a solid singer/guitar player. Through Andy Lareau(All Else Fails, guitar), he found Eric Hausser (Last Man Out), who brought an eclectic and informed second voice to the table. Luckily, Eric had been in contact with Jared Rohde (TwinHaters, bass) over the years, and always wanted to combine their musical talent. It was finally the time for that phone call to be made, and the core of Counterpunch became complete. From day one as things began to take shape, the friends involved knew they had stumbled upon something great.
With ideas coming from all over the board, the creative process began. While growing accustomed to one another’s style, it seemed as if songs just began to flow, making the members believe that their respective eclectic backgrounds were anything but a hurdle. It became a springboard with each members musical experiences being seamlessly incorporated into a darker, newer sound.
They stepped foot into Thrift Store Studios to lay down a four song demo in late February 2004, which has been very well received. It has become a permanent fixture on many college radio playlists both in the Chicago area, and well beyond.
With an energetic and tight live performance already to boast, these first four songs shed some light onto the bands future. Solid, heavy guitar work fronted by soaring three part vocal harmonies. All pieced together with just enough pop sensibility for any listener to enjoy.
While polishing material for their debut full-length album, Counterpunch is out and about the Midwest rocking face after face off with its own blend of melodic punk rock and power-pop. They maintain a constant stream of self-promotion through online listening communities, radio spots, flyering, and well-targeted demo dispersal. It’s paying off as both their fan base and street team continue to evolve and expand by the day.
With the strength of four mortal men, Counterpunch continues to bring forth their distinct smooth blend of punk rock that might even make you switch to decaf. So get ready to hear the catchy melodic hooks you crave, along with a good helping of in your face, no-holds-barred punk rock. And make sure you pack a helmet, because Counterpunch will soon be rocking off a face near you.
