Each brings to the unit his own version of rock and roll and the concept of contributing to a single musical goal as a group. To understand the band is to understand the music; simply, rock. Since it’s inception in early 2000, Ottawa’s Universal Habit has been playing constantly, touring quarterly, and recording continuously. Although the band hasn’t toured across Canada yet, each member has been in a musical unit that has…some even three times! Take a listen to what experience and professionalism bring to some great music.

STEVE ZIPFEL
Steve’s style is a kind of hybrid of blues, hard rock and metal that he has, some say, successfully moulded into his very own style. His gritty guitar tones create the bottom half of Universal Habits sound. Able to play the hard and heavy stuff as well as kick back and steal a lead or two, Steve draws influences from the likes of Kim Mitchell, David Gilmore and ZZ Top.
FRANCIS O’KEEFE
Although Francis began as a student of the blues, he has grown into a dynamic guitar player. Over the past years, by playing with various original bands, he has gained control of his style and refined his playing. With a mix of blistering heavy tones and pungent phat riffs, Fran has given Universal Habit the ability to move in any direction they see musically fit. He credits his major influence as Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble and the lessons are truly unmistakeable when listening to his playing.
ARNE RÜCKERT
Hailing from Germany, Arne is an accomplished studio musician, music teacher and live drummer. Arne is a student of jazz and has a style and sound all his own. From his hi-hat work to his amazing use of ghost notes, he is the backbone of Universal Habit.
DAN MCDONALD
Dan has been performing for audiences since he was a kid, with the sole inspiration of defining himself as a standout, quality musician to the world. He brings to Universal Habit his own brand of alterna-rock/blues, where he shifts his rhythmic and soulful vocals between simple yet definitive riffs creating a seamless balance of energy and attraction. Influenced by bands like Led Zeppelin, Big Sugar, Van Halen, and Stevie Ray Vaughn, with Universal Habit he is willed into the art of creating a bond between entertainer and guest.
