Mr Brown: the sky is the limit
Music, stories and secrets of It''s All Happening, the German band''s debut record
A record full of life. A record so rich and tasteful it feels like a Christmas lunch. So pleasurable it feels like a date with the person of your dreams. A record that is “sweet” yet raw at the same time. An effort that has a common thread even though it sounds dynamically different from song to song. A roller coaster of emotions. Punk, rock, 60’s tinges and other guitar driven sounds. Mr Brown come from Hamburg. Their debut record ”It’s All Happening” is in the stores and to tell you the truth: it’s pretty close to being perfect. I caught up with Daniel, lead singer of Mr Brown and we had an interesting conversation and he answered a few questions I was throwing his way.
Let’s start with your hopes and expectations on this record: this is your debut album after your very well received 2004 e.p. Effort. Here you have 13 exquisitely produced tracks. An album so well made you are ready to bet on anything. What are your expectations from this album “It’s All Happening”?
First of all: It’s a pleasure to talk with you about our debut. Concerning the expectations: We are dreamers. I mean for me the sky is the limit. If we are lucky we will conquer the world with this album, but we need to be lucky ones, of course. It’s pretty tough for young bands nowadays.
Let’s take a step back. If you were to introduce yourselves to people that don’t know about your music, how would you go about it? But the fundamental question is: what are Mr Brown really made of?
Mr Brown is a gang of 4 really weird rock’n’roll guys who enjoy to entertain the crowd. I mean we love the circus. On tour we have all the power in the world. When I hear the crowd sing a song like “Better End” I believe that music really can save the world! We love big melodies and we perform energetic songs.
Let’s go back to your new realease. How did it feel to work with Swedish producer Ronald Bood? His work with Mando Diao, Sugar Plum Fairies and The Shout Out Louds proves that he has a thing for beautiful hooks and sweet guitar sounds. What was his input on the record?
Ronald is a wonderful person. I’m so happy that we had the opportunity to work with this guy. He helped us to make our songs even bigger. He forced us to perform the best we ever did. Personally he showed me trust and respect while I was performing my vocals for the album and it was a wonderful feeling. I visited him later in Stockholm for the final mix I got to know him even closer. He is a fantastic producer. Really grand!
I read a quote you gave some time ago that went: “Our music is about rock‘n’roll”. What is rock n roll today for a young band like yours that flyes the flag for the “cause”? Is it just an attitude these days? Is it all show and no substance? Or is there still some raw element in it where you could say to dj music f*** you?
For me Rock’n’Roll goes far beyond an attitude arrogant lads show on stage. Yeah of course people want to adore Rock’n’Roll stars. They live the way of life ordinary people could never do. But Rock’n’Roll means also sleeping where the dogs sleep, trying everything for the one thing you believe in. And of course it’s about the girls. Never forget the girls. They are the ones who keep us going.
Your music is fairly versatile within the one rock‘n’roll “flag”. From great riffs of “Shivers” or “Wonderful Day” to the punk tinged “Ego” and the diverse “Face It”. Atmospheres reminiscing 60’s tunes in “Love Songs” or “Better End” are there too. Some of it reminded me of early Weezer. Where does this eclecticism come from and how do you approach it your song writing?
Songs normally develop without my notice. They just appear and I try to “grab” them before they disappear again. When I sit outside with a guitar I always take along something to record on. Where my eclecticism comes from? I think nearly every song has been written already and I just use what I know.
