EMERGENZA VERSUS RED SOX
Lansdowne Street was definitely crowded on Saturday the 26th. At a very first glance the red color of a thousand T-shirts worn by people and those hanging up from the street booths left me speechless....which upcoming band has such a large fan base? I have a better look at them....Red Sox...none of the groups participating in the Final has such a name... it must be something else. Suddenly I realize the stadium is just across the street. Red Sox versus Phillies. I look better again: two long lines twist in between themselves in the middle of Lansdowne Street: the former going to the stadium, the latter heading to the Avalon ready to attend the last American Emergenza final show. Indeed, here there are, other T-shirts with better colors and different patterns break the monochromatic flow of the street. The most famous club of Boston opens its doors at 3:30pm ready to welcome 14 bands and more than 2000 people crowd, which prefers its own local musicians disputing their place at the worldwide final to the baseball match and its very famous players. It’s not that common being able to see some of the most talented emerging bands and their own potential future rockstar all together in a warm June afternoon.
Sad Marvin opens up the night putting the Avalon atmosphere on the right track for a successful night. The powerful singer’s voice and the band’s tightness make the energy of their songwriting overflow onto the audience, totally unprepared to such a catchy beginning, making it jumping around and heating the room up at the right level.
Rock’n’roll makes its own entrance onto to the stage through the intriguing songs of Say When: a group which perfectly fits into the new wave of Rock’n’roll but that, at the same time, mixes it with the classic taste of The Who. Say When drummer, declared by the jury panel the second best drummer of the night, manages also to bring back home the complete set of cymbals by Sabian.
The instrumental opening piece of September Twilight has a great impact on the room, this very young group manages to involve the audience through an energetic metal progressive style performance, melting under the stage lights all the shyness of its members and showing off such an energy that gave them a deserved second place of the night. The band manages also to get the award for the best bassist, best singer and best drummer.....well done guys!!
The atmosphere changes completely when The Wandas steps on stage. This 5 pieces band all dressed in suits immediately catches the attention of the crowd anticipating a very interesting performance: their very accurate arrangements and impressive melodic lines reminds everyone a lot the English rock style of Radiohead....definitely an awesome show!
The first block of Bostonian bands ends and next on stage is the first one of the two guest groups of the night, there it comes the winner band of Buffalo final: Total Protonic Reversal. This very young 7 pieces band is the only one staging a reggae performance...very weird if we consider they come from the most snowy city in the USA!! Their lack of originality is substituted by a good stage presence of their members.
Sun 5 brings back Bostonian taste on the stage: the original and catching stage presence of its singer supplied with the help of a back vocal female voice takes again the happiness of a pop-rock performance to an easy-listening audience. The bar gets crowded and crowded, the alcohol level rises up and fans’ bodies take back sweating together with the latin dances of the energetic singer.
It’s time for Torque..... what an energy! It’s almost impossible stop staring at the singer and his lighting box, a unique union of sound and colors which gives the impression that Ken is a guy born on stage, supported also by strong musicians and catching songwriting.
Trebek makes us jump back to a softer and melodic atmosphere through the enchanting keyboardist/singer vo
