WASHINGHTON FINALS
Sex and Funk and Rock N’ Roll!
Where do I begin…was it the music? The crowd? The Atmosphere? It was all incredibly fantastic. The final at Club Nation was electric!
It all started for us at around noon when we met with the bands and jury panel. A fun meeting that was a taste of things to come. All 12 bands were backstage eager to give their blood sweat and tears in exchange for a loud roar from the 1200 sweaty bodies packing the joint.
RATTLECAN MOSES, the first band of the night, was both quirky and original, pleasing the audience with their mandolin and electronic percussion sounds (…these guys were bare foot!) and a blend of wit. Next up were THE INSURRECTION, a shot of adrenaline with a pulsating and theatrical approach mixed with a powerful guitar sound and strong vocal flair. By this time, the audience knew they were in for a real special event. Around 7pm EDDIE STONE took the stage. A passionate set by this 3 piece earned them “best band” by their fellow musicians as well as the awards and prizes for “best drummer” (he looked like he was going to have a heart attack when we announced it), “best bass player” and “best lead guitarist”. I bet these guys didn’t have enough space in their cars to fit all these prizes but still enough adrenaline to load them. Up next were DEVINE NATURE, a blend of funky rhythms with rock licks and enough percussion to make the dead rise from beyond and dance. The use of didjeridoo and other “native” instruments on their songs made this band look and sound so positive…a nice touch indeed. ILLUMINATI were up next with the power of men possessed, they played a blistering set with enough energy to feed a power station. The bass player was original and technical swapping duties between conventional electric and upright electric ……he looked like he was making love to his 2 basses! Walk up MONEYPENNY. This female fronted band had a drummer that was close to 7 foot! He was smashing those skins like there was no tomorrow and the singer…what can I say about a sexy, gorgeous, talented…alright alright, I am getting carried away, I don’t need any threats from her boyfriend. Overall, very good. At about 9 o’clock UNINTERRUPTED started with a blend of rock and sex! Yes sex! There is only way to describe it and fuck it! I am going to talk about this beautiful woman singer (even if I risk getting knocked out by her boyfriend drummer) we knew what we were getting when we found half the male population backstage trying their hardest to talk (if you could call it that) to her (isn’t that right Mr. MC?). Her incredible voice along with the solid rocking band was a blend of good and evil, cool and fiery. The moves, the passion, the power…
Step up STRAWMAN! This rock band was incredibly tight and oozing with confidence. Their fans (especially the ladies) were captivated by their performance and showed no restrained in screaming to their every song. One girl held a banner up saying “I wanna have your baby” these guys won the prize for “best performance” …enough said! Well, what can we say about MISALLANEOSSEEDS: energy? Power? Anger? All of the above, plus a strong passion for politics and a pinch of love. One of their tunes, called Intelligence sells has to be one of the most sharp, cleverly written songs by any political punk bands (take note Dead Kennedys fans). This band goes the whole way! The lead singer is a man possessed, kicking beach balls to the audience from the stage and running through the crowd preaching politics to an agreeing crowd (I suggest speaker’s corner in London, Great Britain next time…at the end of Oxford street in Hyde Park). By the time THE DREAMSCAPE PROJECT (in the picture) took the stage 1000 DC citizens were filled with “happy lubricant” (basically drunk the DC way) and happy that the night turned out to be really special (overwhelmed comments everywhere) this band managed to get the 300 or so happy customers (their avid fans) sitting on the floor and swinging their arms from side to side (I felt like a was i
