20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE STAGE

PALE REASON and ROBIN RENEE from Philly

Ehi guys, your Nemo already loves you. Are you sure we never met before? Are you? Dear Pale Reason, let’s start from the beginning! There is a guy (your brave Nemo) who opens the cd envelope and immediately looks at the inlay. I ALWAYS look at the inlay first. The picture of a tree-lined avenue amazes me. Then I turn it, and the picture on the front lays me flat on the ground. It looks like a Douglas Sirk’s shot, or a David Linch’s vision. Their name is Pale Reason. ‘mumble mumble… pale… pale… fountains? No… damn! My musical memories… Ok, that’s enough of these trips about the outside, let’s listen to the inside. Let the music play… Good: Byrds-like jingle-Jangle guitars. Excellent: a John Mellencamp’s air, when he still used to be named Cougar… good old times… a guitar… a sax too! The tune is ‘acoustic con brio’, with a hint of ‘gloomy joy’. When I listen to the female voice, I have a hallucination: I see maria McKee (Lone Justice period), with the baby dress, like on Violent Femmes cover picture. (great album!) Maybe it’s your acoustic sound… Maybe it’s the mood… Maybe it’s whatever you want… But you got your harsh Captain’s heart! So guys… I like your music, I like your feeling and your vibrations. Get rid of that ‘local band’ description, saddle your horses and make for the West… as your musical ancestors did. In the meantime, I connect the stereo to the engine room, the crew will be happy. Let’s dive, Pale Reason are on air. Have a safe trip. Your Captain Nemo has just spotted Robin Renee, singer, songwriter, player of several instruments and main witness of her own soul. Which one? Robin and her pards (with a de-luxe pedigree) flirt with a high sugar content pop. Musically speaking, Robin seems to waver between the great inspiration in ‘I’M COMING DOWN’ (main characters: Robin Renee with voice, acoustic guitar, tables and soul), and ‘THURSDAY MORNING AFTERNOON’, which your harsh Captain found a bit indigestible (too much sugar…?). But Robin is a sincere person. So finally she beaks my heart with ‘I SKATE ALONE’ and ‘MY BRIDE’. Good. Well, it looks like we are partying with Suzanne Vega and Ursula Rucker and our Robin Renee of course. But when Edia Brickell breaks into the conversation, Robin replies with ‘CHANT’ (Astralove Remix). This song moved the undersigned because reminded him of Chuck E. Weiss and Tom Waits… did I shoot a line? Listen to it and you’ll see… moreover, these two guys have always been in my crew, so I know them very well! Ok Robin, your album ALL SIX SENSES is very good (but beware of Edie Brickell…) obviously I speak metaforically when I mention ‘Edie Brickell’… Dear Robin, may Rickie Lee Jones and Laurie Anderson become your guide. Let’s crash-dive now.
