EMERGENZA LONDON 2003

Indie, emo, experimental, alt, heavy, stoner, trash, black, oldschool, ambient, urban, speed...

On the 11th of April London made it. The eliminatory round has its last night in the WestoneFour and can look back at 13 successful events. From the 7th of March onwards this year's participants rocked West London and no doubt after the first night: this is a good year for us! The first eight bands commenced the battle for the crown of best unsigned UK band at the WestoneFour on the 7th of March, who would have thought that three bands performing that night (JOVE, PIANO, COMA KAI) would be the overall top bands of the first round. The night was sensasional both for attendance and music. These three bands have thrown down the gauntlet. JOVE, the top band from the first sets of heats had an overall vote of 136. The band is already planning their conquest of Germany, a fabulous quote by their manager will live on in our memories. When asked if there were any questions about the event she replied. Is there a place where the band can chill out? We obviously assumed that this was related to the WestoneFour-Our mistake- she was referring to when they get to Germany!! Watch out for this band that were voted No1 by audience vote and by the other bands. The essence of the event was also capture by PIANO and COMA KAI, who after competing against each other are now playing gigs together. At each round the bands were asked to vote for each other on a scale between 1 to 10, we had some surprising results. When voting, the bands didn't always go with the crowd, on the contrary, as they normally don't know each other they're 100% impartial and use their own knowledge about how good a performance was or not. HARDCORE PRAWN, STROBE 45, REFLECKTOR are some of the bands which benefitted from the bands vote. For the first time this year, the festival's first stage was divided into two venues giving younger bands the possibility to play in the event. The Kings Head in Fulham is the perfect venue. This Pub and live music venue situated in the heart of fulham has a history of being a meeting point for musicians and all those who love live music. Their license made it possible for the bands to get all their fans down to support them without having any troubles at the door. The venue is definitely a true rock venue and most of the young bands truly enjoyed the experience of playing in a professional venue. Metal and punk acts performed there and their enthusiasm got right across to the crowd and Emergenza staff. Just because they are younger doesn't mean they couldn't kick ass. On the 20th March, four of six performing bands got through and some of them didn't expect that. For some it was their first gig and with all their enthusiasm coming across, no one cared about the lack of stage experience. All the nights at the Kings Head had a really good vibe thanks to all the ambitious bands. WHO IS ELMO BLATCH, MIKAW BARISH, SILVERSOUND, HARDCORE PRAWN, NO IDEA, RELIEF MIXTURE, INSULAR, MALAKITE, THE YOUNG EQUADORIANS, EXPECTATION LOW, YEAR: ZERO, EDDYFINK, 4 MAN TRIO, SMOKING CAUSES LOBSTER, THE STELLAS, and CEPHAS As before the club was able to handle some packed, hard rocking nights where bands brought with them on stage some well tight tunes, great voices, mixtures of styles and an eagerness to show us and everybody that they're more than ready for the ASTORIA. Even though most of the nights were taking place on a Friday and Saturday, the bands managed to get a Tuesday night packed out which featured some of our top bands with enjoyable, professional sounding sets TIC, MY COUSIN KATE and NEXT OF SIX. For those present on the night no he didn't say all the other bands are shit. He actually said shit HOT but unfortunately the mic was turned off by our sound engineer before he could finish his sentence! Bless him. Being successful in the first round can happen through a lot of ways.
