Get to know Ernie Ball Music Man.

Maker of top quality guitars at reasonable prices.

With butterflies in my stomach, I picked up the phone and dialed the number in San Fransisco, California. My heart beat was faster than normal. I took a quick glance at the list of questions in front of me, and a minute later I was talking to Sterling Ball. Sterling is 47 years old, director at Ernie Ball Music Mann, worldwide producer of guitars, bassguitars, snares and other gadgets. My tension was completely unfounded. Sterling started out by telling me that no one uses a title at Ernie Ball. The work atmosphere is friendly and enthusiastic, and even on the phone he really put me at ease. I went through some of the questions on my list and the answers were revealing. Here is a short summary. Life is a journey, a passage and that’s also true at Ernie Ball. Sterling was lucky to be born into the Ball family, so it was easy to follow in his father’s footsteps. He can’t imagine himself in any other occupation... his father was also lucky to have a son who admired the music business and had the same ambitions. Mainly, Sterling is busy with the marketing. He is part of the development team, and new instrument design. This is right up his alley, because it gives him room to express his creativity in many different ways. Of course, he also has a huge responsibility for a business with 325 employees. This also takes some creativity. His goal is to follow his instincts without loosing site of the business aspects. He’s certainly successful at it! The company’s goal is to produce a quality guitar at an acceptable price. When I asked about his greatest challenge, he spoke of the importance in supplying artists with the things they need to express themselves musically. About today’s young musicians, he said that they place too much emphasis on making music to become rich and famous. It would be easier to become a U.S. senator! Music should come from the heart, the feeling, sharing personal experiences with friends, connecting with the audience, having fun. It is all a matter of feeling. You play music because you have a love of the music itself. He is still playing music with old school pals, playing in bands, and even going on tour. A problem for bands nowadays, he pointed out, is that they don’t have anywhere to play. The consequence is that they don’t even need a guitar! That’s why Sterling is really happy to be involved with Emergenza. The organisation is out there for anyone who wants to play live. Playing live means a lot of practise, a lot of planning, getting some great experience for life, even if you don’t continue playing as you get older. The ultimate experience? Sterling replied that his ultimate experience is playing live on stage, having control over everything, playing for your audience and feeling free to give in to the music. A good example to follow…..
