To By Four: their interview!

Waiting to see them on stage at the Taubertal Open Air festival

You have participated in the Emergenza Festival Edition 2014/2015. What made you decide to take part in it?
Toby: I came across a link somebody shared in a facebook page in a music group. It looked really good but to be honest it sounded so simple that it was almost too good to be true. We never expected to even get selected to play in the first place! But we are sure happy we did!

As you approach the world final, what is your state of mind?
Toby: Total excitement! these types of stage/ world audiences are the kinds that bands dream of to play in front of. For us it's an honor and we are really excited to show the world what we can do!

What is your best memory from your Emergenza experience?

Toby: The national final was obviously the best memory so far. We had at least 50 of our own fans there but at the end of our set i'm pretty sure the whole venue was cheering for us! That's something that will stick in the back of my mind while we are here

What's behind your band's name? Any specific meaning?

Toby:  It's really simple really, I'm the lead singer and my name is Toby and there's four of us. So instead of Two by Four, which is a description of a piece of wood, we incorporated my name into the bands name.
Marty: It's really funny though, because a lot of people don't get the name at first and are totally confused. They think it has some secret message or meaning, but its actually really, really simple hahaha.

If you had to choose a famous song that represents your band...which one would it be?

Toby:  It's hard to choose just one particular song. Because what makes us so unique is that we are able to create a repetoire that you can't really catergorize into one particular genre. We definitely choose funk rock as the foundation though. I guess if we had to choose it could be any number of songs by the red hot chili peppers.
Marty: I agree on Toby with that one. Of al the bands around the peppers have the most in common with us, which makes sense because they made funk rock really big. But still, I have to say that a lot of our songs don't sound like any other band; no matter how much work we put into sounding like someone else, we still sound like us.

If your band had another name, what would it be?

Toby:  Thinking of a band name is seriously one of the hardest things to do. I think we were initially called 'Zonnestein' simply because that was the tram stop we had to get out of to get to one of our former gitarists place.

Can you tell us a funny story or anecdote about your experience on stage?

Marty: One time we had a gig at a kitesurfcompetition, and right in the middle of my guitar solo the electricity decided to stop... Fortunately Joost started a acoustic drumsolo, to keep the croud entertained while the rest of us tried to make in work again. When the power was finally on again we immediately started playing Jumping Jack Flash by the stones. The contrast from nothing.. to BIG was really cool.

What can audiences expect from one of your live performances?

Toby:  Really a great time. a lot of fun. we're a fun band and we play for entertainment.  In the end we're a poprock kinda band which means we have really catchy tunes and riffs that will stick in your head eveytime.
Marty: Something they've never seen or heard before. We really live for playing on stage so when people see us, they can feel that energy.

Before you go on stage, do you have a ritual or a good luck charm that goes everywhere with you?

Toby:  Not really. We like to be spontaneous. Usually Marty and I go backstage 10 mins before to warm up our vocals a little bit. But usually we feed off the crowd for energy.

What is your dream gig?

Toby:  Of course a big summer festival like Lowlands or sziget would be awesome! Our own showcase show in a sold out Paradiso (Amsterdam) would be a dream. Although to date this is our dream gig so far!

Do you guys have any hobbies? What do you do when you don’t play?

Toby:  besides music i also like to hit the gym 4 to 5 times a week. keeps my mind of other things and keeps my energy levels up!
Marty: I play all the time, haha. When Im at home Im usually playing something; guitar, bass, keyboard or singing. Pretty much anything that makes sounds, I want to know how to play it. If Im not playing music then I hang out with friends or hit the gym as well.

If you could invite a band or an artist at your party, dead or alive, who would it be?

Toby: I'd choose Tupac shakur or Freddie mercury, there's just too many to choose
Joost: Slipknot of Simon Patterson
Marty: Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan

What are your short to medium term plans after the international final?

Toby:  This for us is the great opportunity to expand our network and hopefully get some international aswell as national recognition. If we are worth it we want people to want us to play for them! so Basically expand our stardom as you might say. get more bigger gigs and the rest will follow.
Marty: Were ready to record a demo, so after Taubertal we further want to expand our boundries and give our music to as much people as possible.

Why do you think you deserve to win the 2015 Festival edition?

Toby:  Because we believe we bring a sound which is made for festivals.  We have a lot of growing to do still but there's a great belief within the group that we have the talent to do what it takes to be big on the international stage and winning this final will prove us that!
Marty: We've had a lot of hard work behing us, and we haven't had the most amount of luck a band can get. This festival gives us the oppertunity not just to play in front of a huge croud, but to skyrocket our careers to a level it hasn't reached yet. I really believe that we can offer music that is refreshing, different and gives people a break to all the "mediocre" music on the radio/charts.
