We didn't anticipate it, however were confident of doing well in the competition. We planned every element of the event, from marketing to song choices, to rehearsal schedules, so that in the event we did not win the competition, we could be sure we had done all possible to do so.
- What were your original expectations of the festival?
Realistically top 3, but obviously gunning for the top spot. There were some great bands, and you never know who's going to play well on the night, or in fact how the judges will view your set, so there are no guarantees.
- Out of all the contest/battle of the bands events that are going on, what made you guys choose Emergenza?
I think the main prize of heading to Germany is a big factor. No other competition gives you an opportunity to play on such a large setting, with a massive A-list of top bands. Of course, the competition isn't over either. It is a world final, so we can't relax just yet. We have to stop, reassess how we did, and then prepare again and try to find another gear. The bands we are up against will be another level up from the UK Final, although getting this far means we have a chance to win the world final, and that's now what we will set out to achieve.
- Will this be Black Orchid Empire's first international/overseas gig with this line up? What are you hoping to get out of it?
In this line up, yes. However we have all individually played many shows overseas in Europe, USA, and New Zealand. It's an exciting prospect, and we're really looking forward to it.
- Have you thought about any other plans for this trip to Europe?
We are currently planning a mini tour, or a 'Road to Germany' tour. We'd like to get 2-3 shows in en-route to Taubertal, to get match fit. And it's great to be on the road too, so I'm sure it will be a great trip. Plus it will be a fantastic networking opportunity for us.
- What would you say was the most rewarding part of this event for you?
The level of support we have received from our friends, family and fans. You put a lot on the line when you enter a competition such as this. Your own fans are always a little biased and think that you should win regardless, and that's the same for probably all of the bands that played. It was great to be able to actually win it, and show them that their support was very much needed and we thank them for that.
- What are the plans for Black Orchid Empire now?
Onwards and upwards I suppose. Sometimes you need a break as an unsigned band. We hope that this is ours. Depending on how the world final plays out, we have a couple of different strategies in play, but they all lead to looking for a recording/publishing deal of some description. We have an unreleased full length album in the wings, we have the current success of Emergenza, and we have some momentum going forward. Let's see what the universe has in store for us!
